My dad just bought an ejector rod shrouded Colt Agent with a serial # of A8031## (actually that A8---- may actually be an AB---) I look at Proofhouse.com and that shows it to be made in 1969 or 1970. How can that be?

Unless it's a rebarrel job, it's probably an "AB" prefix, which is a post-1985 serial.

The available Colt serials end with 1985, so to get a production date, just call Colt during business hours, and they'll give you a date over the phone.

Since the shrouded heavy barrel didn't appear until 1972, if yours is a pre-72, it's been rebarreled.

hmmmmm......now that I think about it, the barrel finish does look a little....different than the rest of the finish on the frame

That's normal.
It's nearly impossible to get blued steel to perfectly match anodized aluminum.

Check your serial number. I'll bet it's a post-1972 model.

It's still difficult to make out, I took a magnifine glass to it and held it under a lamp. It looks more like AB##### than A8#####. I'll call colt, as I need to do anyway, and ask them about it.

They will give you as production date over the phone, but NO other info.
For that, you have to buy a Historical Letter.
