Sometimes I carry a Bond Arms 45ACP derringer.
It's just an unresolved argument. What's better, two powerful heavy bullets or seven not very powerful light bullets (Kel Tec .380).
The Kel Tec usually wins because it's got a laser.:)

I sometimes drop a .38 Derringer in a pocket. Generally it's on very hot days when I don't want to try to hide of carry the bulk of gun. I figure two shots are better than none.

Besides Bond Arms...What other quality makers are there.

I have seen Cobra and American Derringer but know nothing about them

In my humble opinion, the derringer is an idea whose time has come -- and gone.

Try shooting a derringer in any caliber you'd consider suitable for self defense. Shoot enough to get good with it.

You can get both automatics and revolvers which are nearly as compact, adequately powerful, easier (and less painful) to shoot, and offer more shots on tap.

Kel Tec the modren Derringer lighter faster into action and more rounds. Leave the 2shooter to movies.

There is no need for long practice sessions, as a derringer is, and always has been a belly gun. If you are more than two giant steps away you don't use it. Also any repeaters as small as a derringer is in a pipsqueak caliber that may just piss your attacker off. The closest in stature to a derringer that is of what I consider an acceptable caliber is nearly twice the size.

It's amazing how many men have missed at two steps. And an attacker may not give you the option of engaging at that range.

Instead of a derringer why not consider something like a Seecamp 32. A much better cartridge, holds 6 rounds and not much bigger coming around 10 oz unloaded. I never leave home without it.

I'll soon be picking up a Bond Arms derringer in 45LC (thanks Buck) as a BUG to my Taurus 450.
This is America - bigger is better.:)

I found the Kel-Tecs too long in the but for my comfort.

I carry my American derringer in .45 Auto/Rim everyday.

The argument of many small or two big for me is over.

I can load it very powerfully easily. The load that's in my pocket right now is a 255gr pure lead SWC at about 950 fps.

I have an American Derringer 45 Long Coly/.410 shot.
I keep it loaded with Winchester Silvertips, and keep a couple of extra rounds in a seperate pocket.
I also carry a couple of .410 00buckshot in the spare ammo pocket.
The buckshot does some pretty serious damage when shot into a clay block, but I am hesitant to carry loaded with it because 90% of LEOs I have spoken to{ usually in a class I am teaching} dont know that the 45/410 derringer is not considered a short barrel shotgun. I have "educated " at least 20 officers that it is legal to carry a pistol chambered for 410 because it is not a smoothbore. But don't expect the average cop on the street to know or understand federal statutes, and believe me you will not be able to make your case to them.

Derringers are a bit...over the hill. No argument with Vern there. But, a Derringer can be a lifesaver as long as we understand that it's a do or die, last-ditch resort. As in...contact wound when the Wolf is at your throat.
They're not easy to hit with beyond touching distance in a hot-blood moment,
and practice won't help much. But they're flat, compact...in less than Buffalo-Stomp calibers...easy to drop into a pocket, and light. Not a first choice by any means...or even a distant second...but if things go hand-to-hand, and you're about to be stomped into a wheelchair...a .38 Special Derringer stoked with 125/+p beats prayin'. Even a .22 would likely have resulted in a different outcome in the Onion Field tragedy.

Another vote for the obsolescence of the derringer. The modern day replacement is the J frame S&W of your preferred flavor; or a Kel-Tec. The .357 derringer I bought some 43 years ago has been in a shadow box for the last 25 years and will stay there.

The only one of the bunch that ever seemed trustworthy was the little High Standard. Someone ought to revive it.

Or, if you're into REALLY serious pain, inaccuracy and horrid trigger pull....

The COP 4-shot .357.

dad used to carry a .38 special derringer in his coat pocket when he was a trucker, as did many of his colleagues. he gave the derringer away when he put down roots, but held on to the Colt SAA he always kept holstered to the driver's seat.

Agreed. My p3at isn't much larger than my derringer and much lighter and a bit thinner. Plus its not single action or 2 shots and I'm reasonably accurate with it. I also think the keltec is safer than my particular derringer.
