Lets se now, the FBI says the violent crime rate is up by over 4% in the last year or two.

What has changed?

Criminals getting lighter jail terms? No, that has not the trend nation wide. The trend has ben for stiffer and stiffer punishments for the last twenety years or so.

More poverty? They say poverty "causes crime". No, the economy is doing well, and tens of thousands of people who existed in the poverty level got thosands of dollars free rom the govrnment last year as a result of FEMA/Katrina. Poverty isn't on the rise by any indicator...hmmmm.

Breakdown in moral values? Well, lets se now. That trend has been going on since the 1960's, and yet, violent crime had been on the decrease from 1992 until now...hmmmm.

Lets see now... what could it be? What has been changing rapidly in our society in the last few years, something we haven't wanted to look at....?

Eureka!! Could it be ILLEGAL ALIENS? Could it be that our country is being invaded by a FOREIGN NATION and that this invading people don't give a hoot about our laws, traditions, customs, constitution, civil liberties, etc...? Could it be that we are being inundated by the worst rabble the third world has to offer and this element is PRIMARILY responisble for the rise in violent crime in the last few years? WOW, could it be?

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! We can't say that! Why, Geraldo told me on Fox News they should be considered "Honored Guests". I keep hearing how they just want to come here to work hard, obey the law, pay their taxes, and raise their children! Don't be a hater!

I know! Lets all close our eyes, join hands and sing kum-bai-ya, and dream of that fuzzy pink horizon where we'll "all just get along..."

Why does my brain hurt now...? :banghead:

What has changed?

An increase in the members of the population aged 13 -25. This was predicted years ago when the violent crime rate went down. The administration in Washington at the time was crowing about how community oriented policing and federal money to put more cops on the street was bringing crime down. While those may have been some factor, they weren't the main reason. The main reason was the population aged and many of the worst criminals simply got past the age where violent crime was a way of life. The criminoligists who pointed this out also said the violent crime rate would start climbing again as the next generation of violent criminals reached the age where they were most likely to be involved in violent criminal activity.

There are a lot of factors that contribute to the violent crime rate. But the biggest factor is the number of people in between 13 and 25.

This increase is right on schedule.

Um, could it be the Chiefs of Police and Mayors aren't cooking the crime figures as much as they have been? Now where'd those links go I posted the other day? ;)

Jeff White has part of the answer, i.e., that the population of young men, the cohort of the population that commit most of the violent crime, is on the rise compared to a few years ago. The second part is a result of this first part. As the crime rate is rising with more young men being incarcerated, more are also being released without jail time and the longer sentences that we saw a few years ago are being shortened again due to limited prison space. The population growth is the key, but if we had continued to build new prison beds at the rate we were doing so in the '90's we might not have seen the violent crime rate go up quite so dramatically. That said, I also believe that the increase in illegal aliens has exacerbated the crime problem in many parts of the country. My worry is that the critics of concealed carry laws will try to use the rising crime rate to show that concealed carry does not decrease crime but in fact increases it. The gullible and frightened public might just start believing them. Here in Illinois we already have the most powerful politicians, Mayor Daley of Chicago and Gov Blago pushing for more gun control laws, I can only imagine what they will propose as the election gets closer.
