This letter was in the Memphis, TN Commercial Appeal today:
Stupid letter (http://www.gomemphis.com/mca/letters_to_editor/article/0,1426,MCA_538_1921911,00.html)
As a veteran of local law enforcement for 30-plus years, I oppose expanding authorization to carry pistols into places that sell alcohol (April 24 letter, "Expansion of carry permit will help the good guys").
I have three legal permits to carry a pistol and I would never think of taking a pistol with me into a public accommodation. What are you going to do with a pistol in a bar?
If you are the kind of person who would contemplate exchanging gunfire in a room full of bystanders, you should not even have a gun permit.
The most important aspect of being armed is knowing when not to shoot, not seeking to expand the legal opportunities to do so.

I'm still trying to cool off before writing a response.

Based on this comment, this 30-year LEO veteran has 3 legal permits so he can walk around his house armed. He never carries a pistol into public areas.

Who would have thought that the terrible October 1991 tragedy at the Luby's cafeteria in Killeen, Texas, would ignite a fire that continues to burn today. During the lunch hour of that fateful day, 35-year-old sociopath George Hennard plowed his pickup through the plate-glass front of the cafeteria-style restaurant and proceeded to shoot-to-death 22 unarmed people, wound some 20 more, and then turn the gun on himself....Contrary to its Wild West image, Texas did not allow concealed carry at the time, and a law-abiding citizen like Suzanna Gratia Hupp, a young chiropractor who watched her parents gunned down at Luby's that day, was unable to defend herself since her legally stowed gun was in her vehicle.

From the Desk of El Tejon:
Dear Chief Wiggum,
If you believe you should not be armed as the minute your lips touch beer or even enter a tavern you become a reckless cowboy, then please send your pistols to me. In the meantime, leave the good people alone. If you wish to create governmentally approved slaughter zones, I nominate your home or police department. The right of self-defense is not washed away by demon rum.
Where are the problems that you foresee manifesting themselves? Two states north of you, in gritty, hard-drinking Industrial cities, good guys, even lawyers, carry pistols into tavers, bars, watering holes, and clubs. Where are the problems? Please point them out to us unenlightened Yankees.
In fact, I carried (not one, but two pistols) into such a horrible place last weekend. Surprisingly no firefights erupted over our game of Cricket, although a waitress was hit by an errant pool stick in a embarassing place.
Yes, I know the important aspects of carrying a pistol, that's why I go to skul. Yes, I know the dangers of fighting. That's why I study fighting, so I do not need to fight. Most of all, I know I do not, nor does any free man, need their elected mommies in the General Assembly to tell one what to do.
XOXO,
El Tejon
P.S.--what department is he with and how can you defund it immediately?

Why should people's civil rights be declared null and void the moment they enter saloons and taverns?

What do I think I am going to do with a pistol in bar? NOTHING! What I do is not dependent upon me, it is dependent upon the threat, sir.

I guess this brings me to my next question. Who carries when they go out and have a drink or two with dinner? I do. I also usually drive to and from unless I've had too much, then my wife does. No where in the law (FL) does it say I cannot drink while carrying. Moderation is the key.
