When I first got my .45 XD (4-inch Service Model - about 600 rounds through it so far) I was happy as punch when shooting factory loads but somewhat disappointed when shooting the 200 grain LSWC's that my Kimber loves. I was having problems with FTF and an occasional FTE. The load was 4.7 grains of Bullseye under a 200 LSWC Bevel Base from Keadbullets seated at 1.235.
The primary (and most annoying) problem was the edge of the brass would hang up on the feedramp. I was averaging about 1 of these per magazine . .maybe a little less. There was no pattern to this problem. It happened early in the magazine, late in the magazine and wasn't isolated to any of the four that I own. The other problem I was experiencing was a FTF where the bullet went nose-down in the magazine. Just pulling back the slide and letting it go fixed the problem, but it was a bit disconcerting to have this happen. I'd say the nose down problem happened about once every 3 magazines worth of ammo.
My first attempt was 4.7 grains of bullseye seated at a COL of 1.245. This ran a little better, but I was still getting the brass hanging on the feedramp maybe 1 time out of 2-3 magazines. The worst part was that it took a gouge out of the brass and made me chuck it in the recycle bin!
I then loaded up 100 rounds with 5.0 grains of bullseye and a COL of 1.262. These were almost perfect. I had one stovepipe FTE and one nosedown FTF. The most encouraging bit was that I didn't have a single round where the brass hung up on the feedramp. :) :)
I just finished loading up another batch of 200 rounds with 5.4 grains of bullseye and the same COL. I've got a good feeling about them and I expect that they will run as well as the factory hardball and hollowpoints that I've been feeding it.
Just thought I'd share.
Have a good one,
Dave
