I work at a sporting goods store and in the market for a plinker. We have a Ruger 10x22 carbine (.22 lr) rifle for sale for ~$140. I was wondering if this was a good deal? I spend most of my time here on the autoloaders and handguns section..... not to familiar with the .22's. Any comments are appreciated. I have a .270 for hunting deer. I'd like to get a .22 for target/plinking and maybe give it to my son/daughter for their first rifle a few years down the road. Oh ya, the rifle does NOT come with a scope, and looks like it has a wood stock.

The Ruger 10/22 is probably one of the most modify-capable rimfire semi-auto rifles out there. From the old 50-round plastic banana-clips to the resin free-stocks to the tricked-out "space-commando-style" race guns, the Ruger can be changed out all kinda ways.

And, from what I've heard, $140.00 is a pretty good deal. Gunbroker.com has a Ruger 10/22 with a birch stock for $189.00.

Go for it! I paid 120 for my stainless 10/22 with a wood stock, but that was a good many years ago. I agree with Beorn, the price for anew 10/22 is somewhere around 200 bucks depending on where ya are I suppose. As for the rifle itself, you will more than likely love the accuracy and assesory options for the 10/22. I can rapid fire my 10/22 all day into a 2" group at 50 yards. The groups do shrink in size when you slow the firing rate down too. 1" groups should be commonplace. (been too long since I could contain my trigger finger on that rifle) It's too much of a hoot to empty the mag as quick as possible with this rifle. And on top of all that pure shooting joy, the 10/22 has to be the most assesorizable (is that a word?) 22lr rifle on the planet. You can choose from at least 25 different stocks, new triger parts, muzzle breaks, etc. All in all the 10/22 is a truely outstanding rifle. :D

Get the Ruger, but be warned that you may contract Rugertinkeritus. There are sooo many parts available it's amazing. You can modify it now with a more adult sized stock (I found the wood factory to be too small for me, although I only wanted the receiver and the bolt) and then switch it back to the smaller stock when your children are ready to shoot. Your most likely scenario is you're gonna tinker with it till you've got a rifle you're not going to part with. You will end up buying a new one for the kids.

Loads of fun. I picked up an old, beat-up one at a gun show with chips missing from the stock and bluing worn through here and there, with a cheapie 3-9x40mm scope mounted -- $75.

Some TLC, a new Hogue stock, a Williams peep sight and some new trigger parts and it's perfect.

Well, maybe it needs... :)

It's a good deal on a 10/22.

There are many .22 rifles that are more accurate. Most of them probably :)
