SKS mags

I'm sorry if this has been answered in another thread,
I have a Yugo SKS with the fixed 10 rd mag. I have SEEN the higher cap mags for basically the price of scrap metal, I am wondering A: how to pop off the fixed mag and use those instead, and B: If the conversion to using AK mags is even worth doing. I've read advice that says the only reliable conversion for AK mags involves gunsmithing, and I'm not wanting to dump cash into a rifle I bought specifically for economy.

i haven't found any high-cap SKS mags that worked that well, but changing the magazine is pretty easy. if you want more capacity, get a fixed mag instead of one of the "detachable" jobs.
check out http://www.surplusrifle.com and look under the SKS section, there will be disassembly instructions, including removing the magazine.
as for conversion to AK mags, it's a job for a gunsmith. read up on your local laws.

Hi-cap mags for a SKS are the price of scrape metal because they are scrap metal that happens to be in the shape of a hi-cap mag.
Seriously, stick with the stock 10 rounder and buy some stripper clips. Most people including me have tried hi-caps and found the hard way they just don't work.
As far as the AK mag conversion? It would be much more cost effective to just by a $300 AK. At least then you have 2 working rifles instead of 1 screwed up rifle. ;)

Or, If you still want an SKS that takes AK mags, find an SKS-D or SKS-M, both of which were made to use AK mags, and work perfectly.

I have spent $90.00 on 20 and 30 round mags for my SKS. :fire: The best I have found is the 10 round attached box mag using 10 round stripper clips. :) I can't remember any jams or malfunctions w/ the 10 rounder. ;) The 20 & 30 rounders do not perform as well. :barf: Many jams, and malfunctions :banghead: where no round is picked up and chambered. :cuss:

Indeed, if you want a cheap rifle that takes 30rd mags, do yourself a favor, forget modding the SKS, and just get an AK.

There are just some things you can't do to an SKS legally

Yeah, I read through that link, and the BATFE rules, besides being vague and enenforceable are about ten times more complicated than the rifle is.
In any event, I didn't get this rifle as a SHTF rifle, or for HD, I mostly was looking at versatility. I'm explaining to my son that if you aren't good reloading manually, then a detachable mag isn't going to help you much in real life. (I got it to have a coyote rifle I don't mind beating up a little bit. I think I can work a stripper clip fast enough to prevent them from killing me.)
A friend of mine has his AK, and I've shot them plenty, I guess I'll add one to the list.
