What's the difference between these 2 pistols and what are the advantages and/or disadvantages in each of them. I am considering a 45ACP purchase in the near future and I would appreciate members insights. Thanks, Brett

These are the original military models.

1911 with bigger sights, shorter trigger, arched main spring housing, frame relief cuts behind the trigger, and a longer grip safety tang became the 1911A1.

Currently, 1911 is used as a generic term to refer to the many pistols that follow the same basic frame/slide/barrel configurations though most all modern iterations exhibit changes from the originals.
