Walther P99 LaserMax mod

I have been frustrated by the lack of lasers available for the P99, which is a shame because I think the P99 is an excellent gun. It seems that the only lasers available for it are external bolt-on types, like the BA-7. While useful, this prevents a normal holster from being used and would alter the balance of a almost-perfect (for me) balanced gun.

So, I have decided to whip out the ole slide rule and make something (or modify it). The two lasers I like are the Crimson Trace laser grip (I have one one my S&W Scandium and it is wonderful, but not available for the P99) and the LaserMax internal laser that replaces the spring guide (unfortunately, also not available for the P99).

My choices are to buy a Crimson Trace, cut the components out, and stick them onto the P99 or to find a LaserMax for another semi auto that will fit in the P99 spring and make a switch of some sort.

Since the P99 does not have removable grips, I suspect sticking Crimson Trace Lasergrip components would look awful on the P99, and pose problems with snagging, etc. So, I'd like to buy a LaserMax spring-guide type laser and futz with a custom switch. But first I have to find a LaserMax model that will fit.

Does anyone here have a LaserMax for a 9mm pistol? If so, can you post or PM me the dimensions so I can compare it to my P99 and see if it will fit?

Thanks.

I really don't like the lasermax system, I wonder if crimson trace would consider doing a run of laser grips for us. How do they put them on glocks? Double sided tape?

I have contacted Crimson Trace several times over the last couple of years, and they say there is simply not enough demand for a P-99 laser.

I dont know if they use tape for the Glock system, and wonder if this laser could be modified to the different P-99 grip. I know that the Glock has a 22 degree rake angle whereas the P-99 has a 17 degree, so I am concerned that a modification attempt would fail.

What do you not like about the LaserMax system?

I'm just not big on the idea of adding stuff inside my gun as a possible failure point. I also like the 1 handed operation of the crimson trace stuff better too.

The one real advantage of the p99 here might be the removeable backstrap. If you felt like experimenting you could order a spare to "operate" on. Perhaps do some crafting with clay or something to see if you can find a way to make the 2 fit together properly then create a more permanent solution if it does work?

There's a roll pin on the GLock right where the webbing of the thumb goes. Crimson Trace grips include a slightly longer pin for installation. It's part tension, part pinned-on.

Yep, he beat me to it - the Glock model is held by a pin - it would not work on the Walther.

Unfortunately, Walther does a terrible marketing job in America - otherwise, the gun would be more popular. I think its a better gun than a Glock.

To resurect an old thread. Not a guide rod model but a laser for the P99 on Flea Bay.

So why didn't you resurrect it with something the OP was actually looking for?
