I already have a field knife.
Now I would like to get another tool that will serve fulfil as many camp duties as possible. I like to keep things simple, and I like to keep the bulk and weight down.
What are your suggestions?

Glock Shovel.
It would complement my Glock field knife very well.
What about the shovel that Cold Steel makes? Is it a good choice?

Yup. Dig, chop, hammer, defensive thingy. Good.

It would be hard to determine not knowing the kind of use you need it for. Camp shovel like the Glock or Gerber or GI (the Cold Steel shovel is an updated Russian issue shovel); an Ax/hatchet/machete; how about a Leatherman? All are great tools but have a different purpose.

Glock vs. Cold steel shovel.
Glock shovel is lighter, pretty indestructible, folds up to be much more compact(BDU cargo pocket) and the screw on saw stored in the handle is very usable. I think the Glcok shovel is a better deal by far than the CS or the USGI folding shovel. The CS does make a better weapon if you're not going camping but are actually planning on a wild shovel hacking spree.

:D
To answer Zip06's question, I already have a Leatherman. It is well worn, and now opens with the speed of a butterfly knife.
What I would like is to find a tool that could pretty much work for digging, cutting, and a little pounding (tent stakes).

Cold Steel will chop.
Glock will saw.
Since I tend to think in worst case scenario terms, I would probably prefer the CS to the Glock (since the CS makes a better weapon). Hey, I have a CS shovel!

Leatherman Tool
SAK
Electrical tape.
Kinda miss hubcaps...makes a good emergency shovel. Those "caps" from a Willis Jeep not bad for scrambling eggs...

I think I will go with the Cold Steel shovel then.
I am clumsy and destructive by nature, so much so that I do not allow myself to be around glassware.
A few more ounces is a small price to pay for something that can stand up to my lack of common sense.
