View Full Version : What about a weapon-mounted high-intensity flashbulb?

Given that the majority of us can't use flashbangs indoors, what about the possibility of mounting a focused high-power camera flash on a gun? Or just using it as a handheld unit? Camera flashes are 180 degree spread, consider backing a flashbulb with a reflector so it's as focused as a regular flashlight (30 degree spread). I think that getting hit in the eyes with one of those would blind me for a few seconds.
From some googling, a flashbulb is 240cd, and a flashbang is 4100cd. However, a flashbang is 360 degrees, while this device would emit light only in a cone of 30 degrees. I'm trying to work out the solid angles. I think that the brightness would br 90% of a flashbang in that cone of 30 degrees.
Do you think that an armed BG getting hit with a blinding flash of light would disorient him enough to get in a few more shots? Of course, you could time your own blink such that your night vision wasn't ruined.
What do you think?

It'd be even better if it came with sound.
First sound:
Rack the slide on the 1911 or the Remington 870.:D
Flashbang-
Second sound:
Bang!
Talk about disorenting. Perp would probably think he was dead. :banghead:

Ya know, that would make a good booby trap. Since the courts frown on the "shotgun on a string" method you could rig up something like this to go off on a tripwire. The bright flash would destroy their night vision as well as daze them. You could also rig a loud buzzer to it so you would be sure to be awakened by it. You then have the advantage. Your eyes are adjusted to the dark and his are not because he was just flashed. Magnesium flashbulbs would be best since they do not require a large battery like electric flashbulbs do.

Yeah, but this has problems too. With my eyes, darkness is my friend--if one of these popped from a mount on my gun, even if I'm well behind it's fire-arc, I'd be blinded along with Mr. Threat. This is definitely a "YMMV" option...
But if you can either close your eyes until the flash fades, or delay entry to the "Free-Fire Zone" until same, it might work for you. Again, YMMV...

Neat idea.
Another variation on this is powerful electronic (AC power) strobe lights with variable frequency carefully situated and installed facing chosen avenues in the home. Several switches for one or more units could be remotely wired and placed out of sight and out of reach of children. This might stall or cause a substantial break in the momentum of a home invasion.

Mounted on your gun, a "flash" could blind you too. And if you have a chance to flash, why not just shoot?
I like the idea of house mounted flash/bangs though.
From your bedroom you could target certain zones in your home (living room, kitchen, etc.)
If you think there is an intruder you could use these to disorient or scare away intruders.

I vote "bad idea".

In a SD situation, I am not closing my eyes.
