How i remember those early morning, late evening roe hunts in england. after a week of that you need matchsticks to hold your eyes open. when i was younger i was out as soon as it was light. As i got older had just as much luck stalking evenings only.
No hunting here in Sweden till the 16th August when the Roe Buck season starts. Then its hunting with the taxen for roe from the 1st october and the Moose huntig starts on the 9th Oct. Then to Scotland for the sika hind stalking last week Oct. Good luck and i hope you get a good buck

Here in Texas because they are considered a non-native animal we can hunt Roe Deer on specially stocked ranches year round. The fee at one ranch a buddy of mine wants me to try is $250.

Well i went out in the afternoon and shot a few wood pigeon. I went home to get my rifle when i got a call from a gamekeeper mate of mine asking me to help him with some foxes that are raiding his release pens.
I went out and sat in a high seat. I saw a half grown cub at about 20 yards and shot it with my rifle. I was suprised how little damage it had. i shot it with a 150 grain .30-06 round.
I might go out tomorrow and give it a go.
I must say your seasons in america seem really short, i spoke about this on another thread about Mule deer. What is it for white tail and what others do you have?

Shot a 450 lb. hog last weekend in Oklahoma. It was miserable hot and muggy. Early mornings were/are beautiful though. Caught the boar crossing a road at first light. I was still hunting through some brush when I saw him, range was 25 yds. or so. Shot him twice with a .45 Colt- the last shot at 15 ft. (he was coming at me). I was shooting a custom Ruger Bisley ( by Ben Forkin), with 300 gr. XTP's @ 1100 fps. Exciting stuff- lotta pork.

Laws vary from state to state. I'll stick with what I know about Texas.
I can hunt varmints anytime of the year, any time of the day. Coyote, cougar, coon, jackrabbit, bobcat. Squirrels and cottontail rabbits have controlled seasons only in a few counties of Texas.
Our javelina, the collared peccary, can be hunted all year around as a game animal, but there is a limit of two per hunter.
Some of us here have recently figured out that since the original elk of Texas are officially extinct, the elk that are now here are of a different sub-species and are feral--and thus huntable as varmints.
Same for most of the imported exotics: No season, no limit.
Wild hogs and feral hogs (often a mix of the two) are regarded as pests--which they truly are.

As Art said, game seasons vary heavilly by state. According to my uncle, South Carolina's deer (mostly whitetails) season runs from August through at least January, with large limits if any. Contrast that with Arizona (where I live) where there's typically two 1-1.5 week long rifle deer (mule or whitetail depending on the part of the state your tag is good for) seasons, plus archery, and muzzle-loader seasons. Reardless, you can only get 1 deer tag per year, and average success rate is 20%.

I'm sorta huntin' another cup of coffee...:neener:
The fee at one ranch a buddy of mine wants me to try is $250.
THAT'S CHEAP! Most exotic ranches I've seen are outrageous. I hunted hog on a high fence ranch, wanted over 4K for a red stag, only one I asked about. The hog hunting was 3 meat size (under 100 lbs) for $180. I killed all three in a day of hunting. Place was over-run with hogs. The friggin' exotics were tame, though. I wouldn't hunt the things with a rifle, just walk up with a little corn in my hand and whack 'em in the head with a hatchet. Had a Mouflon walk right up and sniff me and walk off leisurely.
I'd like to go hog hunting, but it's just too danged hot and humid this time of year. Don't seem to keep me from going fishing, though. Another thing about hunting down here, the skeeters will drain your body of liquids if you stay out too long in the evening.

i put in for deer, elk, turkey, antelope, and javelina this year. figured i'd shoot the moon and get something. took a 70lb javelina this past spring. haven't been drawn for any other game in years. i've been pretty unlucky in the draw.
in the fall i'll hunt quail and dove in the desert ranges and foothills outside of town, and all year long i hunt rabbits and coyotes whenever i get restless and tired of the city.

Same as lawson. Hate the draw but that's what we have to do in order to rifle hunt. I also bowhunt and that is a longer season out here. Starts in Sept. Best time of the year to bowhunt is in Dec/Jan during the rut.
When I'm not hunting big game its birds and bunnies. Can hunt varmints all year round but it's too darn hot out to walk ridges calling in yotes this time of the year. ;)

Out here our modern firearm Deer season runs roughly 2 weeks in the last half of October. I say roughly because it has different dates in different GMU's(Game Managment Units). Then let's not forget the High Buck Hunts, and Late Buck hunts.
What scares me this year is I am planning on taking the wife to North East Washington. It's one of those GMU's where you can find both White-Tails, which area any buck, and Mule Deers, which have a three-point minimum. It means if you take a snap off-hand shot at a deer, you better hope it's not a Mulie.
Modern Elk season runs about a week long, and usually falls at the end of October, beginging of November.
Mr Eatman Said:

It's probably just huge levels of jealousy on my part, but that sounds kind of...wrong.
Art, how common are these non-native Ferel Elk? If I had the opportunity to shoot elk year round with no license...I would probably lose my job. I would defiinetaly lose my wife...but then, I probably wouldn't care!
As near as I can tell from reading our regs, the only thing I could actually go hunt today is Coyote. Even crow have to be in season(October 1st to January 31st). Most other small game runs September 5th to March 15.
Sigh. :(

priv8ter, totally an uneducated guess, but I'd bet that west of the Pecos River are less than a hundred of these free-ranging non-native elk. A few ranchers in the more eastern areas have some "pets".
There used to be a fair-sized herd in the Guadaloupes, up by the New Mexico line. After the NPS took over there was no more maintenance of the back-country water supplies--so the elk moved out. Possibly a very few in McKittrick Canyon, but I dunno with any certainty.
I've no idea about the Panhandle country. Even there, probably not many.

There's still a herd in the Guadalupes, at least up on the NM side. I've hunted those mountains a few times for mulies, but don't touch a hair on a Wapiti's hyde 'cause you could get 30 days in the electric chair for it.

Most of the states in the southern part of the US have relatively long white tail deer seasons. For example, in Alabama we start hunting white tails with bow and arrow on OCt 15, muzzle loader nov 15 and guns on about Nov20, and all end on January 31. We can take two deer per day, one of which can be an antlered buck.
We can hunt hogs year round.

Nope no elk in the panhandle art, I wish there was. Too bad we cant have them reintroduced to this area. Sure would be fun.

Saturday afternoon I was hunting pheasant through cut-over pine forest over a Springer Spaniel with my neighbour. Three pheasants sighted (2 male, 1 hen) only 1 shot at and missed (dang tree leapt into the way).
Lotsa deer though (and plenty of deer sign). One other bird hunter saw 8 fallow deer, 2 of which he just about stepped on before they leapt out of their beds a few yards from him. I saw two deer walk out onto the road on the way out of the forest from bird hunting. Dang deer know when you haven't got the right to shoot them!!

I took July 3rd off and went rabbit hunting at Grizzly Island on the Sacramento River Delta. Very windy, no rabbits (no grizzlys either:) ). GI is a pretty tightly controlled hunting area - rabbit hunting permitted only in July and whenever pheasant are in season. Big game hunting (elk, hogs) is permitted only by lottery but the success rate is very high (about 85% for hogs - CA public land generally has low success rates - less than 10% - for big game).
Yesterday and the day before I was deer hunting in the Los Padres National Forest in Monterey County. Spectacular scenery overlooking the Pacific Ocean and very few hunters out even though it was opening weekend. My buddy stalked a group of 4 blacktail bucks (including 2 legal pronghorns) the first day and seemed to have figured out their favorite trail. Yesterday morning at sunup he spotted the same group, as hoped, but never got close to bow range. The terrain was rough, but far from the worst we have seen in CA. I lost a couple of pounds and got eaten alive by mosquitos.
California is chopped up into zones, Monterey is part of A Zone and archery season runs 3 weeks, followed by general deer season for about 6 weeks. Very confusing, but the seasons are here:

Yes, (firearms) hunting seasons here in the Northern USA are usually very short compared to Europe and the Southern USA. Indiana's firearms season for whitetailed deer runs from November 18 to December 3, 2006--muzzleloaders, shotguns with slug and pistols. (Centerfire rifle only with predation permits [given to landowners for deer that eat crops, orchards or tree farms]).
Here are the rest of the seasons for your own information: http://www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/hunt/season2.htm
Nice looking roe deer.:) Good hunting.

I just booked a Maine bear hunt for Aug 28.....It will be the first hunting I'll do unless I get out for woodchucks between now and then, but I rarely do.
I've been to Maine for bear 5 times....Hoping for a BIG ONE this time! Can't wait!

Not much open here this time of year but for varmits...
We have a bit of a drought going and a lot of heat, and with the spring behind my house getting all the more popular...will be going after some coyotes this evening.
