WASR 10/63

Can anyone tell me about this rifle? I picked up one at Dunhams the other day for $329, with two 30-rd mags, sling and cleaning kit. It is a hi-cap model, with what appears to be a scope mount on the side. The bayonet lug has been cut off.

I don't see it listed in Century's catalog, is it someting new or discontinued?

Also, the bayonet that came with it, I have my doubts as to whether it is an AK bayo. In fact, it is a Spanish bayonet exactly like this one: http://www.rubylane.com/shops/charmingandcheap/item/3777

I believe the WASR is the Romanian version of the AK that was designed to use the single stack mags. A dremil, or file, in the mag well made them able to take the hi-caps. The side mount is the set up if you want to use a scope. $329.00 is a good deal. It is a good rifle.

My brother and I each bought one right before the AWB sunsetted, "just in case." It is a solid rifle. Mine has been 100% reliable. In fact, I have a hard time even making it malfunction. The only time I've succeeded is when I threw it in a river after filling the reciever with sand and even then, it was river muck in the magazine that ultimately did the trick. Mine has also been surprisingly accurate. 4 inches or so at 100 yards with Wolf ammo. I can hit a gallon jug regularly out to about 200 yards or so and could probably score regular hits with aimed fire out to about 300. I did replace the trigger group with a TAPCO G2 unit, which unlike their furniture, has proven to be solid and dependable. I put an ACE folder and TDI handguards with a VFG on mine, and finished it off with a PK-AS-V red dot sight. The sight ran me about $200 and is as solid and reliable as the rifle. Removes from the sidemount easily and returns to zero. I am very impressed with my set up, and it all started with a WASR that, at the time, ran me about $279.

If you have trigger slap, it is easier to just drop in a TAPCO trigger group than bother with Dremeling the components. About the only work you should personally need to do to your WASR when you get it is check to make sure you mags all fit in it. Both of our WASRs wouldn't take the Bulgarian waffle mags because of burs in the mag well. Five minutes with a Dremel cured the problem.

I couldn't get a drum in mine til the dremmel fixed the burrs. But, enjoyed mine greatly--can't beat it for the price.

I sold mine when I started building my own, but never had any trouble with it.

Check the sights to see if they're "canted", that's sort of common.

Trigger group - at minimum the trigger is already a Tapco G2. Not interested in tearing it apart to see if anything else is stamped right now.

Looking at the sites with instructions on dremeling the mag well, it appears that it is about as cleaned up as it can get. Haven't tried any other mags yet, but a drum does sound fun.

Canted sights - slightly. Shoots straight, though, and it is probably going to get a red dot if I can figure out this mount.

Sight mount - any idea on how this works? I have attached a picture below

EDIT: Also, is the barrel threaded so I can stick on an original compensator? This thing looks like it is tack welded on, but it should come off easily.

You slide the optic on all the way forward from the rear then throw the tension lever on the optic mount forward. Takes all of like 2 seconds to take the optic off or put it back on, and as near as I can tell, it maintains zero. Check out Tantal for a PK-AS-V or Kobra. Those are the best things going for the AK in terms of red dot optics.

My magwell worked decent, but I dremeled it out more anyways. I also had threads under my welded on nut. Just grind the weld off, push in the pin, and spin it off. LH threads BTW. It doesn't like HP Wolf, but runs fine with FMJ Wolf.

I guess what I am looking for is what kind of scope mount goes on that base? I don't really know what it is called to look for one.
