Hi guys & gals,
I picked up a beautiful Blued long barrel K frame Smith & Wesson.
The problem I have is with the guys eyesight that sold it to me.
His eyes were so bad he GLUED Red metallic glitter to the front sight so he could see it better.:barf: Made me sick when I saw it. It's got glitter & glue in the front on both sides and all over the sight.
Anyway, any suggestions as to what will get the Glue but NOT the Blue off the end of the gun ?
The gun shows no signs of wear, just signs of childrens art projects.
Anybody have any ideas ?

Thanks, Jeff (GUNKWAZY)

Well, I'm no expert, and caveat emptor, but you might try Scotch Brite. The 000 grade. It's recommended for buffing cold blue, so I'm assuming it won't hurt the bluing on a firearm.

Yet it might be abrasive enough to get the glue off your gun.

Sorry,
That's not gonna work.
It's going to have to be some type of chemical to break down the gobs of glue.
Thanks anyway.

Fingernail polish remover may do it, and will not harm blue.

There is a very good chance the glue is water soluable. Try good old warm H2O and a brush first, then try stronger stuff, right on up to bore cleaners.

Strange as it may seem, most paint/lacquer remover don't attack blue. I would apply paint stripper to the sight with a Q-tip, after I tested the stripper on a concealed surface, such as the underside of the side plate or frame under the stocks.

Another solution is to bake the stripped frame/barrel in an oven at low temperatures, 200 degrees or less for about an hour. After that if the glue has an epoxy base it will flake off.

XavierBreath's , method I would try first.

Next would be using Ballistol with a toohbrush. Use it straight, it really penetrates.

Then Ballistol with really warm water [10 - 20% Ballistol] I have put the solution back in a microwave to rewarm , reuse, repeat if necessary. Heck I often soak, stuff in this this warm solution.

Yes you can save this solution and reuse if need. :)

Non toxic, oh and if nuked too long, it does a great job of cleaning the inside of your microwave. :)

acetone, goo-gone, brass brush

Try soaking the barrel in goo gone then use a paper towel to wipe it off. Soak it for a couple of minutes first, to give time to act. May need longer time depending on the type of glue used.

Fingernail polish remover (acetone)
Goo-Gone
Alcohol
Mineral Spirits

If one of the above doesn't get it off then nothing will.

MEK maybe? Sold at the stores as, I think, lacquer (sp?) thinner. Stands for something like methyl ethyl ketone. Nasty stuff, got stoned on the fumes once in the Navy cleaning a paint sprayer - I still remember the headache it caused. When I use it today, I use it OUTSIDE.

Anyway, great stuff for dissolving all kinds of stuff....I often use a 50/50 mix of alcohol and MEK - if one don't get it, the other will.

Solvent alcohol, or acetone, soak and gently use an old toothbrush depending on the type of glue used.

Hold on just a sec...Does that gun have a red insert in the front sight? If it does, all those solvents will melt it right out too.

Flick your bic, should melt right off. Chief
