Why is it so darn hard to get ammo for this rifle? What gives?

it's b/c the first rifles hit the stores a little ahead of the first batches of ammo. adn then when the Ammo hit the shelves, hornady was the only company making it and their production capacity was below the demand for ammo. so when ammo WAS available those who had the guns already, tended (still do) to buy as much as the could at one go and horde it a bit.

so the answer is b/c what ammo is making it to stores was/is being bought up almost before it reaches the shelves.

good news though, Hornady is starting to catch up with demand a bit AND Remington is producing .17HMR ammo now. adn others can't be TOO far behind.

I certainly hope they offer it in something other than a 17gr pill.
I think a nice 25 or 30gr PSP would make me feel a bit more confident when the game is a bit beefier than squirrel or bird. It'd improve the BC too, for better downrange smack.

CCI is making some now. Found a bunch of empty cases at the range a few weeks ago.

CCI is the manufacturer for: CCI, Remington, Federal, & Hornady .17 HMR ammo. They are several million units behind as of last week, but are changing from a "plate" that makes 600 rounds at a time to one that makes 1K at a time. At least, that's what they told me when I called:D . With any luck the shortage should start to ease soon.

Spoke to a vendor Friday, he said the ammo is being rationed because it is in very short supply and the demand is much greater than expected. His SUPPLIER had only 5 boxes and wouldn't give him any despite the fact he still had two .17 cal rifles for sell on his shelf with NO ammo to offer.

I was thinking more on the lines of groundhog, but there's other game that it might excel at as well.

I am very interested in learning about all the production on the .17. If anyone shows a preference towards a certain ammo maker, let us know!

A friend who I consider fairly knowledgable told me that ALL the current .17 HMR is made by CCI. Can anyone confirm this?

Would be nice if there was some actual competition. Is the design copyrighted such that other companies can't produce it? I would think Aquila and Wolf might jump in and start making it too.

It's pretty funny in San Jose, 1 store has no .17 HMR ammo.
A second store will sell you one box a day ?!
And the third store said "Hey, buy as much as you want." So I did
I have no idea how the ammo wholesaler's distribution works in this area. I doubt the stores do either.
