Can someone tell me the best method for removing cosmoline from a SKS stock? Any help would be greatly appreciated

The way I used to get it out of the Stock is to use heat and let it oooze out.

I used an oven. Set the oven to warm which is about 150 degrees. Don't go any higher cause you can actually burn the wood and you don't want to do that. Put the Stock on an old cookie sheet that you are not going to use again for cooking.

Wait until you see the cosmoline coming to the top and the wipe it off with a rag. Wear an old oven mitt cause it will be quite warm to the touch. Just keep doing that until it quits oozing out.

Do this when the wife isn't home cause it will stink up the house. :D

Or you can wrap it in paper and put into a big Black garbage bag and set it out in the sunshine.

It took me several hours to get it out enough that it quit oozing out and it looks pretty nice too. :)

I've head of guys making a cosmo-oven with two metal garbage cans...paint them black and it'll get even hotter in there. Here in southwest Florida, all I need is my attic...gets over 140 degrees up there in the summer.

+1 on this method. It has worked very well for me, and it keeps my wife from getting upset when I mess-up her kitchen.

Anyone ever make up a batch of their whiting paste and use that to extract out the cosmo? They say it works well...

I'm not familiar with "whiting paste", can you tell us more?

Here in southwest Florida, all I need is my attic Yup. I did the same thing. Wrap the stock in an old sheet and pitch it up there for a week. Don't use anything your wife considers to be a "good" sheet or you're in for a divorce.
