I've lost all confidence.

Several months ago I purchased a Remington 870 Express. It was already set up as a home defense weapon. The guy said it only had 50 shells through it. I've put about 75 shell though it.
It looks to be in good shape.

It has a 20" barrell. A forend light, an extended tube that holds 7 shells, a sidesaddle for 6 shells, a buttstock shell holder, a sling for up to 9 shells and trijicon sights with ghost ring.
All in all, pretty good for the home.

After practicing at the range I've found a big problem.

Every 4th or 5th shell, the next shell won't come out of the tube. It just stays there. I don't know that untill I pull the trigger and get a click. I've taken everything apart, and can't fine any burs or obstructions in tube. I have made sure I rack the slide really hard and fast. Doesen't seem to help.

Also in between the failure to load, I get a jam while racking the slide. The shell hangs before going into the chamber, just below the lip of the barrel.

This is first my shotgun so I've disassembled it a couple times for cleaning and lub, and even taken the trigger group out to lube it.

I don't know where to look next to fix the problem.

In the meantime, I've lost all confidence in the gun as a home defense weapon, and If I need a weapon I'll just grab my SA XD-9. But that's silly. I want this gun to work. I may need more than one weapon sometime.:uhoh:

new mag tube spring will probably fix it right up.

Aside from replacing the spring....

None of the "post-ban" dimples in the tube?
What about the shell latches?
Any burrs or deformity to the shell follower?
Any chance you may be short stroking it?
Any damage / deformity to the carrier? Looking from the side, how much hangs below the receiver?

An idea here. Besides checking the other stuff already mentioned, try this....

After making the weapon safe and sure that it's not loaded, take the extension off. These are usually composed of a collar that screws into the mag tube and then a tube that screws into the collar. Unscrew it all, then screw the tube into the collar as far as it can go.Rescrew the collar onto the mag tube, tighten up hand tight. See if that does the trick.

If not, try taking off the extension and seeing if the thing functions better with a standard spring and cap.

HTH...

I'd suspect the mag tube as others have said. My second step on trouble-shooting would be the shell stops. A good going-over with action blaster and then a good lube will clear up many problems with these. The third step would be User-Induced malfunctions. Are you short-stroking the gun?

All good suggerstions.
I'll get busy and take everything apart and recheck and relube.
Thanks

Another thought, try dumping the extention and trying it with a regular mag tube cap & spring.

If that solves the issue and you want an extention - asuming you have the Remington factory 2 pc extention - try a 1 pc extention such as those from Choate or Vang.

Here's an idea. Buy a Winchester 1300 Defender. They come with a stock extended magazine made as one tube. :D

or a mossberg 500. same deal.

I hope you iron out your feeding problems. i had some with my mossberg which were interruptor latch related. (there was a burr on it, and it would release the shell late enough for it to puke out on the ground)

My Mossberg 835 would do the same thing.

I took the magazine cap off, removed the magazine tube clip and pulled the magazine spring and follower out. I ran a bore swab down the magazine tube and coated it a bit with some RemOil with Teflon. I also pulled the spring apart an extra 6 inches, then put it back in the magazine tube. Now it seems to work fine.

Generally, when the shells won't feed from the magazine it is either because of an obtruction in the tube or the magazine spring it too weak.
