What do you recommend for cooling time on light .223 sight ins? How about outside temp? Matter at all?

Temperature changes will throw your zero. Hot = high, cold = low. As for effects on the rifle, they're negligible if you're shooting a slow, careful sight-in. Shooting 100rpm is going to wear it out faster, but if you shoot, mark your card, re-acquire, aim, and sqeeze off another round, you should be just fine.

If you are shooting until the barrel is hot to the touch, and you want to let it cool a few minutes...
Stand it upright with the muzzle up. Make sure the bolt is locked to the rear and your action is completely open.
Walk away and let it vent the heat for a while.
Avoid laying it horizontally.

Never heard of the vertical position of the rifle. Why? Chimney effect?

I have put an aluminium cleaning rod in my barrel if I am shooting 12 to 15 shots. This seems to draw heat. Byron
