I was looking at the rifles referenced in another thread and find the choices are overwhelming. Any help?

Thinking of 30-06 as my other rifle uses this round and I'd like to have least variety sitting around necessary.

Apeture sights for these rifles? I know, I know...

The 710 sucks IMO. It is a cheap knockoff of the 700. The 700 is the best by far of the models you listed, but if money is tight look at savages or used 700's.

Remington 710 is an okay rifle, but for the price, you can almost get a much more superior Rem 700. Of the 700 you just have to pick which setup fit your needs best.

IMHO Savage rifles are cheap. The normally shoot well, but the quality of the gun is not that of a Rem. 700.

If it shoots well (and in my experience Savages shoot as well or better out of the box than any other make) then it ain't cheap. Inexpensive, maybe, but not cheap.

710 is a disposable rifle. It will work for hunting. If it were half the price, it'd be a good choice for a rifle you plan to trash.

700 is a great rifle. Even the cheap versions.

Savages are also great rifles. They are some of the few true bargains out there. The Accu-Trigger is a wonderful feature.

The Savage Accutrigger is one of the great firearms business success stories. Not only is it a great trigger, but it's a great lesson on how to listen to the customer.

For a long time, when people asked about varmit rifles, many shooters would say, "Get a Savage and spend some of the money you save on a good after-market trigger." The Savage people realised, "If the customer wants a world-class trigger on our rifles, why don't we make a world-class trigger?

Savage is now offering .22s with the Accutrigger -- great idea!!

Yes. No longer can one say that CZ's are the best deal going, without mentioning Savage as well. I want one!

I need to go back and check Rem700 prices as I had the impression that they were lower than Savage.

I am unfamiliar with centerfire rifle configurations. Can anyone offer help in sorting out the various versions of the Savage and Remington? What are the differences, which differences are worth while? I note some models of Savage come with hinged floorplate and others not--what is the value? Some models in both brands come with scopes, I think--are the scopes worth the money or can a better one be had without big cost?

I wouldn't mind a simple iron sight for moderate distances or BIG targets, but those bulls look awfully small at 100 yds and beyond--maybe one reason I have preferred handguns.

Remington 700 models run the gamut from just over $400 to over $1000.

Check their websites. Both Savage and Remington have good ones.

A typical full-size centerfire rifle will weigh 7 to 8 lb. without the scope, with a 22" to 26" barrel. There are some lighter ones for long hunts on foot, shorter ones for the woods, etc. There are heavier ones for target, varmint and sniper use (military and LE guns usually are heavy barrel).

Also, what do you want? Walnut, laminate, fiberglass, stainless, blued? What's it for?

Re: "What's it for?"

Learning to shoot a center fire rifle and to round out my collection with a good, accurate, versatile rifle.

I tend to like versatile rather than specialized tools, hence my selection of .357 magnum revolvers and a rifle in 30-'06. When first getting into firearms years ago I worshipped bolt actions and still think I need a competent bolt action rifle. I also like traditional styles.

My previous experience with a 30-'06 was BAD, BAD, BAD. Argentine Mauser converted for 30-'06, short barrel (cleared two lanes to either side upon firing). I now have a Garand which is a pussy cat, but the accuracy is unknown so it would be great to have rifle of known quality so that I can judge how much effect I am having on the bullet placement versus the rifle.

There are really too many variations of the Remington 700 and Savage rifle to list all here IMO. I have enclosed links to the respective web sites. This may be the best way to determine which variant you want.

For Remington rifles go here:

http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/

Savage rifles can be found here:

http://www.savagearms.com/centerfire_home.htm

I also recommend staying away from the Remington 710 rifle. If you want a decent basic rifle, look hard at the Remington 700 ADL or any of the Savage 110’s.

FWIW – decent used condition 700ADL’s and Savage 110’s can be found for around $250-$300 around here. With .30-06 being as popular as it is you definitely will not have a problem finding one in that chambering.

Good luck with your search.

Regards,
Rob
