I turn 18 in June.

This is a mess. Gun laws suck. I live in OH. can someone help me with this?

I can't buy a gun. Any gun. New or used, legally, right? So i can't legally claim to own any guns? Can I legally even shoot, then? I can hunt if I'm 16, I think. So I must be able to shoot. I ahem, hope so:uhoh:

I know i cannot buy ammo, not even .22's, not even .410's

I can't buy a handgun till I'm 21:fire: . So can I legally even shoot one? All those time I took the MkII fishing I was breaking the law?:uhoh:

I shoot all the time. I need to know how much and how often I am breaking the law so that I don't bitten by ignorance. And can avoid being caught. :barf:

In PA, 18 and 21 are federal age limits that only limit the PURCHASE of weapons and ammo. As long as the applicable laws and regulations are being followed, for example if you're hunting, you must be a certain age set by the hunting laws. if there is an age limit for unsupervised gun POSESSION, then I believe I'm still in the clear at 16, provided I follow concealed carry laws and other laws of that nature.

Remember that this un educated legal opinion is worth what you pay for it, YMMV.

It seems to me if you're legally an adult at eighteen, entitled to vote, pay taxes, serve your nation, sign legal agreements, et cetera, you ought to be entitled to full Second Amendment civil rights, too.

Depending on state law, you should be legal to possess long guns. For me in Colorado, the minimum age for that was 16. From then until 18 (when I was able to legally buy long guns) my guns were simply treated as though they were my parents'. Same with my pistols - I still can't legally purchase them, but I can be given them as gifts and own them, which I was and I do.

State law probably requires you to be under parental surpervision when using guns (or possibly just pistols) until 18 or 21. There's a good chance that you just need a signed note from your parents giving you permission to be out shooting if they're not there. Check with your state or local police to find out for sure.

Here (http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/statelaws/22ndedition/ohio.pdf) are the Ohio state gun laws. According to them, when you turn 18, you can legally buy, own and possess rifles and shotguns. As long as you are under 21, you cannot purchase, own or possess a handgun. You can, however, use a handgun while under the supervision of a person older that 21.

I wonder do they prosecute underage gun owners like juveniles or adults?

Zahc, When they load you onto the cattle car to Siberia make sure you tell the other prisoners you are a bank robber or a street thug. Maybe get some tattoos and learn to chew tobacco. Political prisoners have it much worse in the Gulag.

Unfortunately, it doesn't necessarily follow:(

I remember a thread about someone between 18 and 21 being in possesion of a handgun and being called a terrorist in the news. That's what got me thinking. A lot of you old:neener: people forget than young people are people too. I don't see much complaining about the 21 year old limit for possesion of a handgun, which is totally unjust IMO. A 20 year old is plenty old enough to die behind a machine gun in a war but can't posses a handgun? :barf:

I would ask what he was doing to raise such suspiscion.

I think it really comes down to your willingness to technically 'break the law", I don't want seem to mindfull of a feel good law, and I may or may not have broken that particular law, but the bottom line is, if you are using the handgun in a lawful manor I doubt you'll draw any questions. You will however be breaking the law. ;)

Actually, he was driving home from the gun range after a shooting session with his father, who happened to be in the vehicle behind him. They'd loaded the guns into his pickup and were headed home when he got pulled over. The cop found the guns and since he was technically alone and in possession of handguns, they arrested him.

Watch out for "age creep." NRA just agreed to an age 25 minimum for CCW in New Mexico. They'll come to regreat that.

rebbryan- you should be able to get the ammo for it, its just a matter of disputing it with the idiots at the ammo counter of wherever you buy. i looked this up (being a minor myself in need of ammo) actualy, i guess it was my uncle who did the looking up, but anyhow, in ohio at age 18 you can buy rifles and ammo for them, you may have to explain that you have a 9mm carbine, but you can legaly buy ammo, and if they won't sell it to you i sugest calling an lawyer.

EDIT- my uncle is an FFL, which is why i had him do the lookin up in his big friggin book of unjust, moronic, stupid , pointless laws.
