BAR vs. BARŪ -- designs similar?

Is the modern BARŪ hunting rifle based at all on the military BAR design?

Or is Browning just using the same name for its cachet?

I know the BARŪ is a fine rifle, I'm just curious about whether functional design elements of the BAR actually went into it. It's just an idle musing, really.:)

Maybe they should have named the current one BSAR?

The BAR was designed as a combat weapon, full automatic, bipod(in WW2),fired from an open bolt. It was made in only one caliber,30-06, and weighs 20lbs fully loaded. It was, and still can be a area control weapon.

The Browning BAR@ is a semi-automatic hunting rifle, fires from a closed bolt, and is available in quite a few calibers, including 30-06.

Other than that they both are gas operated, have wooden stocks and are a joy to hold.

I think you could reasonably call the hunting rifle BAR a descendant of the WW2-era machine gun, because some of the design elements are similar. They have a little more in common than just the name - but it's not like there are any interchangable parts or anything.

Different bolt locking systems, I believe.

Isn't too terribly different from the White Patent system found on the M14. Self-cleaning and self-regulating are good design elements to have in an autoloading hunting rifle. ;)

They sure are easy on the eyes, too.

It was made in only one caliber,30-06,

Wrong, the BAR was made in other calibers. The were also versions made with removable barrels as well.

We wasn't the only country that issued the BAR.
