Pistols come in various designs and with variable functionalities. I was curious about which design most people prefer.
I have never owned a DA/SA pistol, my experience has always been with either striker fired or SA. For some reason I feel more comfortable with a striker fired gun without a traditional safety than a SA with a safety when cocked. I dunno, just me.

Silly, silly question:

Glocks are DAO.

Kahrs are DAO.

Walther P99s can be DA/SA or DAO depending on the specific model.

Springfield XDs are SA.

All of the above are striker fired.

"Striker fired" is NOT a type of action.

"Striker fired" has absolutely NOTHING to do with whether it is a DAO (Glock), TDA (Walther P99) or SA (Springfield XD).

What I have never "gotten" is what is the supposed advantage to the striker system as opposed to the "outdated" hammer.

Given that I am far from being convinced that any "newfangled" pistol is a real improvement over the 1911, I have difficulty seeing why anyone would want the lighter primer strikes, lower visibility of the pistol being cocked, and inability on most to second strike a hard primer if called for.

Where is that shoulder shrugging smiley we don't seem to have?:D

I like hammers better, too. But a striker is cheaper, simpler and more compact.

As a striker requires a lighter mainspring than a hammer, you can also use it to build a pistol that is DAO, but has a lighter trigger pull (I'm thinking of the Kahr).

Just a different way to skin a cat, and seems to be even more popular for rifles.



Like I already said, and JC2 said, a "striker" does not describe how the trigger system works. It either shouldn't be up there, or have it's own category for SA, DA and DAO.

The other category that is missing up there are prestaged DA systems - trigger systems that use two spring to offer firm strikes but light DA pulls. Glock, LEM, Daewoo/FN Fast Action, P99 QA, etc.

So, not a complete or accurate poll.

Im a p99 fan myself. Many people always say "i just like having the hammer".... So far for *ME* ive not seen when having a hammer over a striker would make any difference. My striker is fully inclosed, so wont get snaged on anything, it cant get bent easily, and cant get cockec unknowingly.

Then again the DA/SA action of the 99 series of guns *I* think is one of the best. The long heavy DA, then locked back in a short light SA pull....great idea. I pick up my friend USP :p and get frustrated by having a LOOOOONG second on pull.

I will take a good 1911 as my first choice, second is any full sized to mid sized glock in 9mm and up, third is the sig DA/SA series, Followed by Beretta's 92 DA SA . Followed by HK's USP in 9mm and up.

I have or have had some of everything, but I keep going back to a single action auto. Now if Beretta will make or import a SA 92 I will be happy.

I like single action pistols - with hammers. I've never had a hammer get cocked on accident. I can recall ever having a hammer snag on clothing when cocked.

I don't mind DAO pistols with decent triggers either. I've shot DA/SA pistols plenty and have never really had an issue with them but I think there are more disadvantages to the DA/SA pistols than the single action only or double action only.

Of course with any pistol, proper non-rushed training and adequate field use and experience far out weigh the type of handgun that is chosen.
