HELP!

Ok, I got my sooper dooper RCBS do it all reloading kit from wally world a couple weeks ago. I've decapped, cleaned, primed, and even belled a few hundred cases as time allowed outside of work. I just unpacked the 5-0-5 scale and the POS won't zero. RCBS also has customer (no)service phone hours of 0630-1500 Mon-Thurs - what a joke. I think I may just return the whole shootin match to wal-mart if this is the kind of junk RCBS is putting out with zero support on the weekend - yeah the weekend, you know free time to pursue hobbies like reloading, the time customer support would be most needed. Very unhappy with RCBS right now. Any way to fix the garbage they call a scale?

I have the Ohaus 1010, basically the 505's big brother, and I think it is a GREAT scale. What do you mean, that it won't zero? Do you have a set of check weights?
You need to ensure that there are no drafts, then place the pan on the scale, and adjust the knob on the left side of the scale until it matches zero, on the slide and on the adjusting knob located on the right side. Set the slide to zero, set the adjusting knob on the right side to zero, then set the adjusting knob on the left side until the scale reads zero. That's it! Oh, I would place the scale somewhere so that you can view it at eye level in order to reduce any parallax error that may occur.

According to the manual;

HOW TO ZERO BALANCE THE SCALE
Place all three poises at zero. If the scale has been placed on a reasonably level surface , the beam pointer will come to rest fairly close to the zero graduation on the dial plate. Raise or lower the left end of the base by means of the leveling foot to line them up.

Pretty hard to imagine how a balance beam scale would not work. Some details?

try using the end of the C-shaped poise instead of the middle. i.e. put the open end (left side in your pic) of it on zero instead of the closed end (right side)

Your picture does not show the powder tray attached to the scale. It must be attached for your scale to work.

I wish I could. However, I can't remove any of the poises and there is a pin on the back of the beam that won't allow that poise to move any further. :(

They shipped the unit with a "pan support assembly", but no pan. I guess I can see if Walmart has any charge pans and pay out of pocket, or wait till Monday and SEE if RCBS will send me one. I still think RCBS needs to improve their phone service hours. While I'm relieved that the scale SHOULD work, I'm still not happy with RCBS lack of service hours. Thanks for putting up with my venting earlier.

Calm down. RCBS will send you one.

Frustrating, I know. Patience is more than a virtue when reloading--it is required if you are to make safe loads.

When you do talk to RCBS, I think you'll be pleased. They really do fall all over themselves to help.

Lee, Wayne,

Thanks for the replies, good to hear that RCBS does have great service when they're there. I suppose I've gotten a little too used to 24/7 tech/customer support (and being one of the tech support guys on a 12 hr shift 6 to 7 days a week during exercises, ONE, and OIF missions). Kinda stinks losing a weekend to finish my first reloaded cartridges, but at least it sounds like RCBS will fix the problem as soon as they're able to. Oh well I suppose I can decap, clean, prime and bell more 38 Brass. There's also 9mm to prime and bell, so all is not lost this weekend.

The pan you lack may need a bit of lead shot in it to make the scale zero. Mine have been 2-piece affairs that allow you to do this. Stay cool. It's all good, mah homie.

On the customer service hours - RCBS is on the west coast so their actual hours are 9:30AM to 6:00PM PST. That doesn't excuse them not having a reasonable east coast overlap in their hours, but it explains it. While RCBS isn't a small company, they're not large either by Fortune standards, I can't fault them very much for not having weekend hours. Staffing a 24/7 customer service operation is very costly and would only serve to increase their product costs, and consequently the price we pay.

As others have said, RCBS will make it right - guaranteed. I'd be willing to bet big bucks that someone (employee or customer) pirated the pan from your kit. There is no way you should pay for the pan out of your pocket.

Agreed RCBS is the best in the buisness and they will make things better. I dont think customer service hours are unreasonable and would not be in favor of higher prices to offset their expense in providing 24 hour service

RCBS has good service, and they will take care of the problem, but they still don't match Dillon's customer service. :)

Customer service costs money. Dillon customers pay a premium for their product and part of that premium funds exceptional customer service. RCBS charges less and has correspondingly less service (fewer CS hours) but, in my experience, they stand behind their products 100%. TANSTAAFL at work.

To tell you the truth, I would rather wait to speak to somebody who actually knows something about reloading than talk to a guy on the other side of the world who has never seen a powder scale in his life. I think you will be pleased once the time comes.

Dillon does seem to evoke extreme loyalty in its customers doesn’t it?

RCBS has outstanding customer service - they have sent me parts several times, and my press has been out of print for years. Very nice people, very easy to deal with - I cannot imagine how Dillon could do better without paying you to take a part!

"Dillon does seem to evoke extreme loyalty in its customers doesn’t it?"

Not if you call them and tell them you bought a press at a yard sale. They won't spend a minute of thier time with you on the phone.

I called 3 times looking for help in trying to find which parts I was missing and how much would they cost me to get. All three times I was told to "look on-line, click." I even had one tell me to toss it and he would be glad to sell me a new press.

No more blue reloading equipment on my bench.

Back to the topic, how did the call to RCBS go?

As if Glock vs The World wasn't enough!

ugaarguy has his answer, so no need for the "Press Wars" to continue.
