Suggest to me a good basic screwdriver set. I'm not interested in being a kitchen table gunsmith just would like to be able to take sideplates for internal oiling without messing up screws.

Thanks for your help.

Any of the gunsmithing screwdriver sets from someone like http://www.brownells.com/.

Whatever you buy, make sure they are hollow ground and that you have a good selection of bits of various sizes.

Brownells actually sells a screwdriver set that is made specifically for S&W revolvers. If you already have a driver, you can buy just the bits.

I love my Brownell's Master Set. I have added allen and torx head bits. I also added a couple of different driver lengths. The Magna-Tip design is great. One of the best investments I've ever made. No more boogered up screws. It goes with me on every range trip and is centrally located on my work/gun cleaning bench.

For just a simple screwdriver for guns, I bought a RIG 10 in1 Gunsmithing screw driver. You can get a more complete one like this made by B-Square at Midway (http://www.midwayusa.com) for a litle over $20 with shipping.

That B-Square set is also sold under the Pachmayr and Tipton names. The only real difference is that the B-Square has a brown box while the Pachmayr is blue and the Tipton is red.

It's a very good $20 set.

I have the Pachmayr branded set in the blue box. Caught it at Wally-World on a closeout for <$10. Great buy.

I have the B-Square set - paid less than $20 for it. It does everything I need to do to a gun, and it's compact enough to fit in my range bag. :)
