Just wondering if anyone can offer any advice on a problem that I am having. I am new to wheel guns, so please be kind. :)

I recently purchased a used S&W 340PD .357 (of course no registration card in the box). I took it to the range today and it shot well for about 30-35 shots. Then it went BOOM, BOOM, click, click, click. I unseated the cylinder to check things over. There were no dents in the 3 primers that did not go off. I put the cylinder back in and it fired all three with out a problem.

Any ideas on what went wrong? Can I fix that myself, or do I have to send it back.

We're going to need a little more information.
Did you fire it any more after the problem?

The main thing is to fire it some more and see if it ever happens again.

I had a S&W 325 PD that did that, but I did have dents in the primers that did'nt go off.

I sent the gun back to Smith and they fixed it at no cost to me.

Just call them up and tell them the problem. They just might tell you to send it to them, (they will even give you a FEDEX account number to use.)


I would not tell them that you are not the original owner unless they ask.

Smith & Wesson will fix it for free and pay for shipping all of their revolvers made after 1989 have a lifetime service policy for defects and they fix an awful lot of wear and tear problems for free as well. They will send you a Fed ex label and you will call fedex to pick up the gun.

I shot it again tonight. Another 25 rounds or so. No problems.

Thanks for point out that they have a good policy on replacing things that are not quite right. I think I will put a few hundred more through it and if it has another problem I will just send it in.

You may have not fully released or stroked the trigger through. Or something could not be right with the gun. My 642 has been utterly reliable, but I cannot say the same for a 625 and 325, both were less than 100% on ignition like a previous poster mentioned. I just bought extended firing pins from Cylinder and Slide, the 325 practically punches the primer through the flash hole now. (No, no pierced primers, just no chance of a light strike.) If it show up again get someone else to try to duplicate it, if they have the problem back to the factory it goes.

Myself - I would take it apart and figure out what was broke. If it was something I could fix then I'd fix it, if not then I'd send it back to S&W.

Just sent it back to Smith. I have actually had really good luck with their customer service.

By the way -- did you happen to be shooting Magtech ammo at the time of the gun's failure?
