I've looked at rifle cases, but dang are they expensive! What do you use to carry your toys to the range?

You can usually get a good quality polymer case for 20-35 bucks that holds two rifles, or a ton of pistols.

failing that, the cloth rifle scabbards work well, and if you get a large duffel bag, you can fit a dozen or so rifles in the sack (it gets heavy, but that just makes it a workout)

You can't beat a feildline backpack for mags and ammo, in my opinion the Ducks Unlimited limited edition that you can occasionally find at Big 5 sporting goods is the best range tote I've found yet, the reinforcing and the construction lends itself to carying a lot of ammo.

As much as I hate to admit it, I got my polymer rifle cases from WalMart. The large ones are about $18. We bought several when they had them on sale for $14.

I use soft rifle cases. I'm partial to the Browning cases. I believe I get zinged $30 or $35 for these at the local big box gun store. Seems like a bit much, but not when I look at how much I spent on what's inside.

around here in fayetteville (outside of fort bragg) there are a lot of tactical shops that sell all sorts of range bags in the 35-50 dollar range, i just laugh as i found a "tool bag" that is pretty much the same as those range bags for 8.95. i'm gonna have the korean ladies put some mag pouches on the side maybe a divider in the inside and for 15 bucks i've got a sweet setup

Soft sided cases mostly, but one of these days I'm going to pick up a roll of Tyvek and make myself a whole mess of rifle sized cases that don't take up so much room.

I use an army issued alice pack for ammo, hand guns, targets, accessories, and the like. For long guns I have 2 plastic hard cases $15-20 from wal-mart. Depending how many guns I bring I have also used cloth socks or even a thick blanket w/ a rifle rolled up in it, and the blanket doubles as a lying down shooting mat. My favorite blanket has a water proof coating on the under side $35 to keep the moisture where it needs to be. I think it was supposed to be used as a picnic blanket, but a day at the range is always a picnic for me.:neener:

My local Gander Mountain has "cheapo" plastic/foam padded cases for $10. I actually got mine(2) for free, as when they first opened they sent out coupons for $10 with ANY purchase, a couple times. They will hold 2 scoped guns (but not my longest rifle)...I have a couple "soft cases" that were given to me, as well. And, I bought a "fly rod" case (nice, hard plastic w/foam) for a coupla bucks at a garage sale, but while it very long, its too narrow to take a scoped rifle.

Sportsman's guide has a "tactical" rifle bag which holds 5 30 rd mags on the outside of the case for a really cheap price.

For a range bag, I use a small American Tourister (lifetime guaranteed) bag with a bunch of pins/patches attached. I can carry all I need and more in that bag.

For magazines try cheap cell phone cases or eyeglass cases which open on the end.

YMMV

Rifles are carried in cheap soft cases. Every rifle has its own case. I ususally buy them at gunshows for $20 - $25.

Handguns are carried in a range bag. Also a gun show special.

I use some soft sided, no more than $40.00 type of soft bags for long guns. I only have one long gun that is worth anything, and that is my AR.

As for handguns, I se the nice NRA large range bag my wife bought me for Christmas a few years ago. Love it!

I work in the music industry so I got a really good deal on an Anvil (http://www.anvilcase.com/) guitar case for my rifles an Anvil (http://www.anvilcase.com/) accessory box for my handguns. Custom cut the foam and grinned a grin.

I like the nice aluminum one that have wheels and transports 4 scoped rifles, but at $500.00 +, NOT! :banghead:

My answer--I LOVE to do wood work and leather work. I have all of the tools. I plan to buy some nice wood, wood glue and some belting leather, one hinge and two latches. Within a few evenings of gratifying work, I'll have my own well-made one for not more than $100.00! My daughter has a pair of in-line skates that she out grew, and so now I have wheels. Heck yeah! But, I won't make a 4-rifle case. I'm thinking of a 2-rifle case and the last row for carrying 3 or 4 full-size pistols. Obviously, I am still at the plannning stage.

I'd like to own a nice leather shooting back (or "roll up"). The one that got my attention was one used in a movie. The movie was The Mummy with Brenden Fraiser. His gun bag he rolled out in front of the other protagonist (the English chick who's name I cannot remember) looked great. I'd like to own something like that one of these days. Perhaps I'll look into them when I'm heading off to college.

a decent hard case isn't that expensive, 20-30 bucks. Sure money can be tight, but 20-30 bucks can be fit in if you are a shooter, just shoot a little less for a little while and it will make up the difference.

Looks like I'll head to Walmart for some inexpensive cases; all hard cases I've seen have been $50+ at gunstores.

Well since I fired all Public Ranges...

I use Private Facilites. I rarely "tote" a gun to the range, guns are there.

My shotguns are retired so to speak except the HD gun, a NEF 20 ga Youth single shot.
I use what is handy - wherever I may be. I quit caring , don't matter, gimme a gun and ammo and let me just shoot the durn thing.

When I did, or might have a reason to , I use Sack-Ups, and baseball bat bags, and canvas golf clubs bags - kids size works fine.

Backpacks for handguns, or a duffle bag.

I quit even using a Range Bag...well an offical one. Now last time I needed a "bag" for handguns used a saddlebag off a Harley.

Shotguns I used a Diaper Bag...ladies found me one at the Thrift store with RoadRunner cartoons.

I like RoadRunner...:D

When I broke away from some of what I did, I really broke away. I fired folks from my life that were bad representative of firearm owners.

I did not long ago "bend" my rule and went somewhere, more public. I went to assist two ladies I assisted in instructing how to shoot shotguns. Only one person knew who I was and he keeps his mouth shut, he is like me...

The ladies, needed to shut up some boys with toys, I was there to coach , and this old buddy pulled.

$200 on the line for each lady, $400 on the line, and my ladies kicked butt, took names and took the bad boys with toys money.
Gals run 'em as we say...*grin*

They each shot 125/125. Like old times....*grin*

They use shotguns cases the zippers are broke and the gun held in by a pc of cord...understand we had to find these cases, how it is done, what we do.

I do not have the pcs of any shotgun cases anymore here locally- mine literally fell apart years ago. Now in TX I have still have one, again falling apart and I have to careful when I use it. This gun case is for serious fun...hehehe.

Oh I used it not long ago, but that range is private, the events are private.
What guns? I / We were not there...those events are not sanctioned, and for sure the only equipment race is shooters skills, not firearms, cases, ammo or gear.

We do use free cigar boxes from where I buy smokes....

Wally World style plastic case, (Though I bought one at the Gun Store and one at Big 5.)

Here in Cali it is the law that the container has to be lockable, so thats what I do. Eventually I will have hard SKB style cases, but I can't afford that just yet. My Dad puts his nicest rifle in a $200 Rhino aluminum case, but it sure is heavy.

What really bugs me about the $5-$40 WallyWorld style cases is that they don't fit in the trunk too well. It is nice that they will fit my M39s and duck guns, but when I am taking something wee like my SU-16, I would like a shorter case. (And no, it doesn't quite fit in a quad-pistol case, I already tried that. It is 25"x8" when folded.)

Never understood carrying $1000-$1500 firearms in a $10 case. Prefer Boyt Leather....

Oh I had Boyt leather, fitted guns cases for the extra bbls and all...

Just now how I/ we played the game.

One old boy shows up with a custom Krieghoff in a old tattered and worn remnant...
He has the special case for this $53K set up,
...sort of an unwritten code we have.

Another with a MX8, he too shows up with it together...in a old rag.

Then again game might be played with a H&R single shot, NEF single shot, or a OLD muddy, Model 12, 870 or JC Higgins.

I watched one fella use a JC Higgins he bought for $50 at a pawn shop take home a $3k cigar box *grin*

No gun case, just tossed behind the seat of his truck.

Different games, and reasons for doing stuff.

Home Depot or Lowes has these aluminum briefcase type toolboxes, like an anvil, but a chinese knockoff, they are about $20 or $30 IIRC, one of them holds my ears, targets, ammo, cleaning stuff, binocs, staple gun, and party favors. Also maybe one pistol in a case if I am light on ammo. Then each gun has its own blow-molded plastic case (for pistols) or a soft case/sock (rifles), I throw all of the pistol cases in an old army rucksack. If I am heavy on ammo I use GI .30 cal ammo cans, or fat fifties if I have any empty.

I've got a cheapo golf "drag bag" from Lidl. Not a cart-type but a lengthy bag with small wheels in one end and a decent drag handle in the other. Hurt me all of 14.95€ IIRC.

I can have everything for a four-day-long 3-gun tournament right there. Rifle, pistol, shotgun, ammo, mags, LBV, spare boots, timers, paperwork, camera, stapler, cleaning supplies, power tools etc. The only tricky part is getting it in and out of the car. Besides, it's perfect suburban camo. "Jeez, Jethro, you sure golf a lot. What's your handicap? " "Ummm... 7,62. "

Rembrandt - when any one of my firearms gets over $300 in value, I'll buy a decent case. Until then, $5 gunsocks are fine with me. :D
