I just bought a Mossberg 500 "Persuader" (with the 18.5 inch barrel) and of course the stock was waaaay too long for my 4'10" wife. So we bought a collapsible stock.

But the collapsible stock sits too high up to put my cheek on the stock and sight down the barrel. So what sight can I use that will raise the sight line above the barrel an inch or so, maybe more?

The purpose of this shotgun is to be a home defense shotgun, but maybe adding a second longer choked barrel for clay games. The sight would have to suffice for both purposes.

And how in the world do you mount a sight on a Mossberg?

Any suggestions welcome. I searched but didn't find much.

You could put a laser on it. You can put a see through scope rail and one of dozens of sighting devices on it. You can get a riser that fits on a picatinny rail and has a picatinny rail on it.

There are collapsible stock adapters that position the stock lower, so conventional sights or beads can be used. A second kind of collapsible stock adapter is intended to be used with optical sights, sounds like that's what you got.

Best bet IMHO would be to shorten a conventional stock to fit her properly, install a premium recoil pad, and learn to shoot the short- stocked gun yourself as it is (biggest adaptation is moving the thumb to the top or right side of the stock so as not to belt self in nose under recoil, not a real problem with a Mossberg given its safety location). You might want to add a field length fore- end to the gun too, as many folks with shorter limbs have trouble reaching the police type short forearm. Overextending the support arm makes the gun harder to hold up for them. My wife is 5'4", house guns here have 12.5" LOP stocks, premium recoil pads, field length fore-arms, 4-shot Sidesaddles, no magazine extensions (too much weight out front) and light brackets with removeable lights (Streamlight M3 or LEDWave Z-5s). I'm 6'3", wear a 37" sleeve and shoot the same guns with no problem.

IMHO you don't want to add complicated sighting systems (optics, red dots etc) to HD shotguns. The house gun should be as KISS as possible, the less to fumble with in the dark under pressure the better.

get the low tube if you go with Mesa Tactical. the high tube is exactly that, high. it doesn't allow for a good cheek weld and you have to bend your neck really low to get down on the bead sight.

You maight also take a look at the Knoxx SpecOps Stock (http://www.knoxx.com/NewStyleKnoxx/Products/SpecOpsStock.html). It is adjustible for length of pull and has the added benefit of dramatically reducing felt recoil. Your wife will love you for it.

Interestingly enough, the Knoxx stock doesn't get short enough for my wife. She needs between a 9 and a 10 inch LOP stock.

I can't shorten the original stock because it's the hollow polymer, and there would be no place to put a recoil pad on it. I had looked at a bunch of stock options, and didn't really want to spend as much on a stock as I had just spent on the gun - the mesatactical stock doesn't look as cool as the Knoxx anyway.

And given my options for a stock which is adjustable to less than 10 inches LOP, and $100 or less, there are none which sit low enough to sight down the barrel. Believe it or not, I actually did a fair amount of research before I bought the stock.

Which brings me back to the question I had at first. What sights might be of use on a HD shotgun which might also work for clay games? We both like the red dot type sight on my AK, so that was kind of what I was thinking about but I don't know what works well on a shotgun.

Mossberg offers a model # 50420 on their web site, which comes with a stock you can supposedly adjust down to 10-3/4". Maybe they will sell you just the stock.

They should have a wooden "bantam" stock you can cut down. Only problem is installing a recoil pad afterward.

Unless budget is a serious problem, I'd give up on the "one size fits none" approach, and go with his-n-hers shotguns.

From the name of the gun 'Persuader' isn't it supposed to be used for home invaision and fired from the waist? I'm sure with the stock tucked under mothers arm and the barrel in the right direction, she'd get her point across.?

Budget isn't a serious problem, except that she needs to be kept in AR-15s and Glocks to be happy. We've decided to practice shooting from the hip, since it's mostly an "in the house" gun. Don't tell her, but I'm getting her a longer, choked barrel and a shortened conventional stock for clay games. Simple stock/barrel swap and it's back to the house gun.

If she likes the clay games too much, and is satisfied with her current armory, I've been thinking about building myself an AOW "smoothbore pistol" in 20 gauge for a house gun.
