SIG P220 in 9mm. by SOG?

These are being offered by SOG as NIB in single stack 10 round capacity. I've heard that they were originally chambered in 38 Super, and changed to 9mm. by the factory. They are "West German" marked supposedly for the West German Police
Any SIG fans out there with insight on these? Price is $469.

Isn't a 220 normally supposed to be a .45 ??

I think you summed it up, except that the mags are 9 round, 10 being a misprint.
This seems to me to be the best value in a new Sig going. For the caliber conversion buff, an extra barrel (and maybe mag, maybe not) would allow .38 Super shooting as well.
The only tricky side to these could be mags, but if 9mm and .38 Super 220 mags are identical, then it should be no sweat.
Plenty of leather available, not bad capacity, CHEAP and slimmer than a 226. This gun makes a ton more sense than a 226 with 10 round mags.
If I hadn't found a great deal on a 225, I would have bought this, back when they were $499.

The 220 came in 9mm, 38 super and 45. It came to this country as the Browning BDA and was available in all three calibers. My understanding was that the 9mm was meant for europe, the 38 super for south America and other jurisdictions that do not permit the ownership of military caliber weapons and the 45 was meant for the US where it is king or was in 1975.

There has been a lot of discussion of the SOG 9mm P220s on www.sigforum.com
The magazines are 9 round, made out of .38 Supers with a spacer added to position the 9mms. Some say standard Super magazines work with 9mm. I know they do in my Colt. But you would have to get Super magazines along with a Super barrel. Which I do not see a need for what with the availability of 9mm +p and +p+.

I love everything made by SIG! BUT!!!!! I would stay away from these babies!
USED single stack 9mm 220 for $469 + dealer charge + shipping and insurance?! NO THANKS!
They might be interesting to a collector in about 20 years. But they would not be worth much to a shooter now.
Magazine release on the heal of the butt? Where do you get extra mags?

Here's a link to the "BRAND NEW" 9mm Sig 220 with American mag releases.

The only thing I would stay away from is poorly informed advice.

As already stated, .38 Super mags likely work fine.
Oops, Sig sells them.

And the price for those extra magazines?!

As listed on the Sig website, item #34223103 "Sig 220 9mm 9 round magazine, USA model" for $49.
All Sig pistol magazines are listed on the site as either $49 or $52, so the mag is priced at normal retail.

So those low-cap mags are really cheap at $50 plus shipping per pop!
Don

Yep, the same price as a 6 round 245 mag or a 10 round 226 mag.
So, Don, what you're saying is that it's a bad idea to by a Sig pistol. Correct?

Nasty, nasty boys.
This kind of "banter" is what has driven people away from other forums. Let's point out our differences in opinion in a slightly less patronizing manner, shall we?:barf:

Jeez, what did I do? I politely answered every question without commenting on how obnoxious they were.

I would like to thank everyone for their feedback (especially yours, Handy).
I did find out this morning that these do have the American mag release, and that the mags are original 9mm. and not modified 38 Super (at least that's what they say!).

Frenchy, how much is the P-220 with dealer charges and shipping? Couldn't you get a used P-226 for that price?
And if you want to go low-cap the 10 rd. Mec-Gar magazines for the P-226 are about $18 each.
I'd also check to see if these P220's have the scalloping in the rail like the early P226s.

These 220s are new, and considerably thinner than a 226.

Hi Don,
Actually the total price to me would be $469.00 plus $15.20 shipping. I can order it off of my LE letterhead.
This is just one thing I'm looking at, but have other avenues to pursue...Like a P229 with three 13 round Hi-Caps! ;)

No, conflict iamkris, just a difference of opinion. I don't think the 9mm P-220 low cap pistol is a super hot buy at $469. Handy thinks it is.
I think the P-220 is interesting and IF I were a collector, I might be tempted to pick up one.
Steve/Frenchy, is a LEO and is probably not (my guess/assumption) interested in collecting. I could be wrong on this point.
I just think there are BETTER SIGs out there for serious use for that price. I'm thinking purely function/utility!
Yes, the P-220 is thinner (better for concealed carry) than the hi-cap P-226/P229. But, isn't that why SIG developed the P-225?
Wouldn't this site be BORING if we all agreed on everything? :D

IIRC, I paid less than that for my P220 (.45 cal) at a gun show. The price is reasonable, but not a super-hot deal, especially if you have to buy mags from the factory instead of someplace cheaper like CDNN. Then again, compared to the P210 it's a steal. ;)

Well, I don't think I ever said "super hot buy", but I did say it was a good value on a NEW gun.
Here's my thinking.
I did a search on Gunsamerica of Sig pistols below $500. Of the eight pages of Sig of listings, I got two pages of returns. Once you remove everything that isn't a Sig Classic, you are left with a mostly guns listed as "very good condition", a handful of compact 239s and 2 LNIB 220 9mms. Of those, one was cheaper, but with 1 mag, and the other more expensive.
The Sog guns are NEW. It may be possible to find a newish either 9mm 220, 225 or 239 for a similar price, but that doesn't invalidate the Sog deal. One would be hard pressed to find a NEW 220 or 226 for less that $700, and even lightly used models are fetching $650 or so.
For $469, you get a NEW pistol with the sight radius of the 220 and 226, capacity one round shy of neutered 226 mags and a much slimmer grip. As I mentioned in my first post, I got a 225 instead, trading sight radius and capacity for size.
There may be better deals out there, good luck finding them. But if someone is in the market for a BRAND NEW 9mm Sig, this one has alot going for it at a more than fair price. (Many people do prefer to buy new, and this one is as cheap as used.)
Don, there was nothing preventing you from actually speaking your mind in the first place, rather than a slew of nitpick questions you could have answered yourself. If you know of a better deal on a like new pistol of this sort, feel free to post the link.

If I was going to buy one of these I would be sure
to get the serial number and call SIG. It is my
understanding that they were rechambered from 38
Super but it wasn't by SIG. If this is the case they should be avoided no matter how good a
deal it seams like.

If they were "rechambered" it was by removing the .38 Super barrel and replacing it with a factory Sig 9mm barrel, marked as such (you can't make a 9mm barrel out of a .38 Super).
The rumor is that Sig did it themselves, but if they didn't, does it matter?

I bought a 9mm SIG/Sauer P220 in 1985 and it was an excellent pistol. The grip was more comfortable to me than that of the P226. Anyone that carries spare magazines with their pistol will also find it easier to conceal single-stack magazines than the thicker ones of the P226. I foolishly let traded off my P220 years ago, so these ones have really caught my eye.
