.22's Instead of Major Caliber?

I was wondering how many substitute a .22, revolver or automatic, in your normal training?

Generally, I've found it works well when working on proper technique. Less recoil, noise, and, not to mention the cost savings, allows me to focus on correct procedure.

However, I usually close my training sessions by using my main carry piece.

I open all training and range sessions with my .22.
Then I go to my wheelies and then back to a .22.
Last I use my 1911 CCW.

With both handguns and rifles, there's a lot to be said for reinforcing the basics with something that has no distraction. Let's face it, as a .308 shooter, I can put a lot more rounds downrange, spend a lot more time on form and trigger control with something cheap and easy to shoot. Same for handguns. .45ACP can get expensive, .22 is a buck a box.

Well, Jeff Cooper said "You can learn about 80% of what you need to know with a .22."

I shoot IDPA and start most practice sessions with my ACE .22. It is good for draw to first shot and target transition drills. I do NOT doubletap with the .22, that can give you some funny ideas and bad habits. I finish with centerfire, either 9mm or .45 depending on which I am currently shooting in matches.

I am in the process of setting up a CMP surplus H&R M12 to shoot off a bipod for cheap technique practice in F-class without having to load .308s.

If I'm not shooting well with my larger caliber guns, I go back to the .22 and concentrate on form.

I also love to shoot .22's just for fun. Cheap entertainment!

I like shooting 22's.
Invested in 22 conversions for my 1911 pistols and even a 22 Makarov conversion.

I bought a Ruger Bearcat to plink with 22LR and Shorts.

For my Kel Tec .223 pistols, recently I've been working on a ultra light load for a 22LR like plinking load.

About 15 years ago I bought a .22 Smith Kit Gun as an understudy for My fixed sight J Frames. After much tinkering I found that I was not anywhere as effective with the 2" .22 as I was with the regular J Frames. Can't explain it..........It doesnt make sense to Me, but it was there In black and white. I sold the Kit Gun at a nice profit.....Essex

I shoot .22s a lot and own a .22 analog for everything else. I shoot centerfire too, but honestly, why burn precious centerfire ammo for something like learning the manual of arms? My centerfires, with the exception of a milsurp or two, are fairly soft recoiling affairs with minimal muzzle climb. .22 LR is close enough for lots of cheap practice.

Honestly if all you had a was a .22 LR but you shot it constantly and never did anything else, you'd be a better shot than most people who carry a gun in uniform.

...after thinking about it, I cannot think of a reason NOT to own a .22.

I buy my 22 RF in batches of 5,000.

I guess that says it all for me.

Every range session I will shoot my Rossi .22 revolver DA. All my carry weapons are DA for at least the first shot. The little revolver gives me good trigger control practice.

Cyanide,

What kind and where do you get them from?

My 6" H&R 999 helps me shoot better with my 6" N-Frames and it's a hell of a lot cheaper.

I shoot alot of .22LR in several different handguns. It's a great reinforcer of training, and it's fun too!

I think this thread should be called,

.22 "in addition to" major caliber.

I do 90% of my shooting with .22LR. Since I have a small 25 yard range set into a very large hill in my back yard, it's very convenient and I go through at least three bricks a month.

I have a CZ-75B Kadet (which mostly mimics all the controls of my 1911s), a Taurus 94 (which is a dead ringer for my S&W 642) as well as a 22LR upper for my AR15. That covers familiarity practice for all my SD/HD weapons as well as some solid trigger and sight picture time.

i, like most guys, overlooked the .22LR until i had a few defensive calibers covered. and, like most guys, i came to regret that decision. i shoot my .22s overwhelmingly more than anything else now. still obviously need trigger time with the ones you're going to if there's ever trouble, but putting 500 rounds downrange for $15 can't be beat.
