I have a DSA Para FAL that is similar (minus the quad rail system) but with 16.25" barrel instead of the super-shorty options. Functions flawlessly and delivers good accuracy at any range you could realistically engage at with the iron sights (the gun can hit steel chest plates at 400 meters consistently, if the shooter can as well). I have zero complaints with it thus far.

You're losing even more velocity off the round with the shorter barrel, but I think it would work just fine at assault rifle/real world combat sort of ranges. I don't think the shorter barrel effects functional reliability on an FAL the same way it can on an AR.

Big fun! Muzzle flash and blast is awesome, though, and it's basically uncontrollable on full auto, so I wouldn't exactly consider it to be practical. The shorty barrel combined with a full power cartridge really makes no sense, as you get the worst of both worlds.

The OSW I fired was owned by a dealer. I happen to own an SA58 para carbine, which is semi-auto only, and has a 16.25" barrel. That barrel is still a little short for my tastes, but at least it avoids the NFA issues and velocities are probably a lot better than what you see from the OSW.

I have an OSW semi with 11" barrel for about a year. It is very accurate but I have only shot out to 50 yards with it yet. It has an EOTech on it. It does create quite a blast for bystanders but not bad for the shooter. I have a lot of fun with it and everyone at the range wants to shoot it every time I go. I think it is the best of both worlds though.

I have a couple. DSA sells them. Like the OSW, they look cool but aren't very practical. They are hella heavy when loaded up, and they stick out beneath the gun a LOT (enough to make it impossible to use them from a prone position).

The 30 rounds mags make sense only if you have full auto capability, I guess. But there is a reason almost no one uses full auto 7.62x51 shoulder fired weapons these days -- they're almost impossible to control. That makes the 30 round FAL mag of very questionable utility.

But they look cool!

Or just like 30 rounders. I have modified G-3 30 rounders for my AR-10 carbine (and for hte G-3). You (or at least I) can't empty them as fast as a 5.56mm rifle, but they're fun.

The mag pictured with the mini-OSW looks longer than a 30 rounder (definitely longer than the 30-round G-3/91 mags)

It's a 30 round mag in the pic. As I said, I have a couple that I bought from DSA.

I also have a couple of the 30 round G3 mags, and they have the same problem -- too heavy and too long. My PTR-91 has a bipod, and the 30 round mag is so long that the rifle will rest on the mag with the bipod legs dangling if I try to shoot prone or off the bench with it.

In the picture below, you can see that I have one of the 30 rounders in the SA58. If you look just above the SA58 receiver, you'll see a 20 G3 mag laying on top of a 30 round G3 mag. The PTR-91 pictured has a 20 rounder in it, for the reasons I mentioned.

My recollection is that the DSA 30 round mags are converted from those used with the Bren guns the British switched over to 7.62x51 and used up until the 1970s.

The SA 58TAC that I have from DSA is great..I would hate to have to control even this rifle in full auto and it has a 16.25 in BBL let alone a 11 incher..I however am like one of the above mentioned only have the 20 round mags..I guess its time to look for a few 30 rounders..

16 inch bbl is short enough to be honest. It does well with the PMC 168 gr Match work best through this little FAL of mine.I added a UTG Quad rail for 69.00 and I love it.

I would love to own a L-3 EOtech sight..

Anyone else have problems with their folding stock locking up ? Just curious..

I had a para carbine that I put together, and I wound up hating the balance; way too far forward. My next FAL will be a carbine, but have a standard stock.

And those 30rd mags are just ridiculously heavy!

Michael Bane has shot one of the OSWs on full auto on his show. He has a fair amount of time behind FA guns and he admitted that it got away from him.
