I got rid of my Glock 19 and got the new Taurus Millenium Pro last week (see the range report from a few days ago in this section). The safety or lack thereof was a deciding factor on not buying another Glock. I'm thrilled with the new PT-111 Pro.

Now I just have to figure out what to do with all those pre-ban Glock 19 hi-cap magazines in my closet ;)

I own a Glock-19 and love it. The idea of an external safety bothers some and not others. If you make it a practice to observe basic gun safety handling and use a holster which covers the trigger area, the likelihood of an accidental discharge is no greater than any other handgun IMHO. They are very reliable, simple break down and clean, and for me are just the right size.

I have a friend that worried about the same thing awhile back. He had a Browning Mark III and didn't like the idea of a CCW carried in condition 1, 2, or 3. He looked at the Glock and for him was not comfortable without the external safety. He ended up choosing a Ruger P-89 and is satisfied. Point is if the Glock doesn't do it for you, there are lots of other good choices to pick from just keep looking until you find the one that you are comfortable with. Good luck.

Another vote for the Glock 19. I have two of them, and a 17, and the slightly smaller 19 is more concealable, but just as easy to control as its bigger brother. Very reliable, too - in tens of thousands of rounds through them, I've only had two malfunctions, both with defective factory rounds. Can't blame the gun for an ammo problem! I've taken the G19's through Thunder Ranch, Chapman Academy, and Mas Ayoob's LFI-2 and LFI-3 courses, and they've never once let me down, despite hundreds of rounds a day, dust, dirt, etc.

Another vote for the Glock 19 (or 26 if you were looking for a really little 9mm). I own a Glock 23 (same frame size as 19, but in .40S&W). It's fun and comfortable to shoot. Also very easy to carry (once I get my permit).
The lack of an external safety is a big issue with Glocks. I make a point to keep my finger off the trigger unless I'm about to shoot something with any handgun, so that doesn't bother me. I'm not trying to be snide. It's just I'm careful about that. Honestly, if you get a good holster and practice good firearm safety you'll be fine.

About the manual safety thing: Nowadays my belief is that, I wouldn't carry a thing that HAS a manual safety. I love my Ruger KP95D, but it's not my first Ruger. It's actually my fourth. My very first Ruger, first service caliber pistol actually, was a Ruger P89 with a manual safety. I never carry it with safety on.

The thing is, modern handguns don't fire on their own, or dropped, as they all have something called a firing pin block. And in a self defense situation you want your gun to fire when you pull the trigger, without thinking whether the safety is on or off. That's why I think manual safety only makes sense on single action guns like 1911's. On a double action, only the HK USP has the manual safety that's made right, as you can carry it cocked and locked to give you the first shot single action advantage. With a manual safety like on a Ruger or a Beretta, they just ain't necessory as I flip on the safety and the gun decocks, then I have to flip it off as I want carry it in a ready to fire mode. So safeties don't appeal to me at all. So all my service caliber guns, the guns that I might actually carry, are either decockers, or no safety like Glocks or other DAO's.

Just thought about another gun that doesn't make sense to me, the Taurus Millennium series. They are DAO's, with a manual safety. Makes me wonder why Taurus didn't put safeties on their revolvers as well...:)

As someone else mentioned, the Glock 19 isn't really a good comparison to the XD subcompact. Due to the size, I would recommend the G19 over the XD; I'm not a fan of sub-compacts. I think the XD service nine does compare to the 19 in overall dimensions. The XD service model would be numero uno on my list.

I have a Glock 26, 19, 17 and a few others. I trust them. They are accurate and go bang when I pull the trigger. After taking a good combat pistol class, I am ok without having an external safety. With a good holster that covers the trigger and lots of practice drawing and firing correctly you learn to keep your finger out of the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot.

Spend the money and take a class in combat/defensive pistol shooting. After you get through the class you will feel it was money very well spent and you will likely want to take a more advanced class.

You might want to consider a SIG P239 9mm. They have a DA/SA action. Their DA action is excellent. The SA is fine.

Glocks and SIGs are simple to use, much like a DA revolver.

the xd or xd sub compact, but thats just personal preference. If the lack of a external safety bothers you or makes you uncomfortable, choose a firearm that has one. A friend of mine is a huge glock fan, but the lack of a external safety has convinced him to carry it with out a round in the chamber most of the time. Im a big fan of trigger finger control as a safety, and none of my carry firearms have external safeties but if a safety makes you feel better definitly choose what makes you happy and safe, not what makes the rest of us feel safe.

I think you mean the G26 also...:D The G19 is a very nice CCW..but not a Superdupersubminicompactshortymidget version.
