Just wondering if I need a broken shell extractor for my AK or AR. Anyone have experience with this tool? Thank you.

Extractors usually work better when they are not broken:neener:

Kind of depends on the ammo you're using. If you're using milsurp 7.62 X 39, it usually has mild steel cases. You'd really have to be unfortunate to have a case separation with it. Cheap brass ammo may be a different story. Ditto for an AR. Except the ammo is usually brass cased. You don't absolutely need one though. The problem is that they're cartridge specific. On the other hand there are 'field expedient' ruptured case extraction methods that work well and dont require special tools. A suitably sized tap for example.
However, I must totally agree with stellarpod. It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. The trick will be finding one for 7.62 x 39.

There are many places that sell 7.62x39 broken shell extractors. Just look in Shotgun News.

It's cheap insurance, so go ahead and get one. As others said...it's better to have and not need it.

I've got one for my AR15, my M1A and my M1. All three of them sit in my shooting stool whenever I go to a match. Personally, I've never needed to use it. I did lend it to a fellow competitor at a Garand match once who experienced a case-head seperation. He was counting his lucky stars that day!
