What kind of accuracy should I see from my 22/45 5.5" heavy barrel off-hand...my skill (or lack thereof) hasn't shown me the inherent accuracy of this pistol. I want to know what to expect when my crude marksmanship becomes more polished...;)

With a 2x scope, we used to pick off rifle cases from the bench at 25 yards with a 5" Ruger. 12 gauge hulls at 50 yards.

Greatly dependant on ammo. Try minimag.

My 22/45 will certainly out shoot my middle aged bifocaled eyes!!!
One of my favorite ammo blowing range games it to count how many shots it takes to completely shoot out the center of the target at a certain distance. At ranges of 15 yards or less, I can usually do it in about 75. :D Hey, .22s are small!!! ;)

While I've never done any formal measurement of groups with mine, it is extremely accurate, particularly with American Eagle ammo.

I had a cheap red dot on mine. Wherever the dot landed, so did the round (out to 35 yards). Very accurate!

K40, the only way you're going to find out the potential of the combination of your gun and your ammo is to shoot it from a rest. Doesn't have to be anything elegant, and it may change your point of aim a bit from shooting freehand (though with this gun it shouldn't change too much). If you can set it up, arrange sandbags or whatever you can to rest both the barrel and the butt, sight it in on the exact bull (regardless of where it shoots in relation to that bull), and shoot five shots. With my 22/45, which sounds identical to yours, and shooting as described, one inch groups from 25 yards are not hard. That doesn't mean I can shoot anything like that freehand, but I know the gun is capable of it.

One thing that may limit you in this endeavor is, as ehenz mentions, the sights. The Ruger rimfires are far more accurate than their chumpy stock sights will allow you to discover. I put a red-dot on mine once I figured this out. It does make shooting it awful fun.

I know for sure that my markII is more accurate than my 10/22. I can't shoot it as accurately at long ranges though.

During the rain Sunday (I was shooting on the covered steel critter range at one of my clubs), I experienced "Minute of Steel Ram" at 100 yards. Solid little pistol, very underrated.

Does the 22/45 have to be drilled/cut into to install a red dot?, mine just has the standard adjustable sights.
Where would I go to look at red dots?

You can get an excellent weaver rail, onto which you can mount any number of different kinds of sights, at weigandcombat.com. His mount just fits into the rear sight dovetail, and doesn't require you to drill any holes in the top of your pistol. Works beautifully. You can get red dots just about at any shooting supply site or store, but look at the ultradot when you're at jack weigand's site. That's what's on mine, and I like it. Search for 'red dot' here at THR for more suggestions.

you can also use the solow mounts

http://www.solow.com

they are what I have on my MKII (they will also work on the 22/45)

No wonder I've been questioning accuracy! Yesterday the rear sight almost completely walked out of the dove tail!:banghead: :cuss: This after many erratic left- to way left - groupings.

I'm no gunsmith, can I reinstall it myself?(need instruction- manual has no specs on the Target sights) But I'm thinking I just want a red dot, can I install one myself?

What are good brands and prices, do I have to buy a rail separately?

any info is appreciated...

IMO, it's not the sights that are the limiting factor, it's the trigger.

Yes you can.

The weaver brand set up I had was two piece. IIRC, you will need to take off the old rear sight from the dovetail (it just unscrews then you slide it off), then replace it with the peice that has the proper srcew holes for the rail. The rail/mount then attaches to that. Once the rail is on you can add any scope/red dot you want. It usually takes less than 5 minutes to do this.

Once you get the correct parts it is pretty self explainitory so there is no real need to worry. Call up any of the aforementioned supply companies and explain what you are trying to do, I'm sure they will help you too.

Good Luck,

ehenz
