Here is a very good thread started by our lovely Pax: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=207589

I think you will find many answers there. If you have answers after reading that, let em fly and I'm sure there are plenty of knowledgeable people here that can accurately answer them.

-edit to add- Welcome to THR!

Is there any way you could be a little more specific? Like, maybe revealing what type of sport shooting you do?

"...what type of sport shooting you do?..." Yep, that's important, you need to decide what kind of competitive shooting you want to do first. Handgun, rifle, action shooting with either, bullseye with either. Indoor? outdoor? There's something for everybody. A 'net search for target shooting will turn up all kinds of sites covering all kinds of disciplines.
There are some generalities. Most match bulletins give the course of fire, entry fee, times, etc. You provide the ammo and firearm. A target firearm is nice, but not absolutely necessary. Some, like IPSC/IDPA in particular, require you to pass a training/safety course before you can play. Other types let anyone who pays the entry fee shoot.
Be advised that range safety is paramount at ALL matches. Do anything the range officer thinks is unsafe and you'll be asked to leave. Speaking of RO's, their word is absolute law and there's no 'court of appeal'.
Join a club, if you haven't already, and shoot the practice matches. You could go to a few matches just to see how they're run. It's not a bad idea to volunteer a bit of your time while you're there too. There's always something that needs doing and it's the best way to meet all kinds of great people.

I will put a plug in for the USPSA competitions. Check out www.uspsa.org for more information. I started shooting a few years ago and now I am completly hooked.
