Last year I saw a news release from Ruger announcing their new Mark III in .17 caliber. Their new 2006 catalog and web site make no mention of this new pistol. Does anyone know what happened to this pistol?

The Ruger 17HMR version of the Mark III was dropped from development when technical difficulties arose with the high chamber pressures and recoil of that case in a straight blowback configuration. Ruger adopted some of the styling features of that model into the .22 caliber Hunter Model.

Hope this helps.

Hmm. I think you are refering to the 10/22M concerning the HMR. Same problems with the HM2 for those sized guns, though.

Personally I fail to see the attraction of rimfire handguns that shoot ammo that costs about as much as does 9mm ammo.

I really do see the potential of the .17 rimfires.

It just looks to me that the biggest part of that potential is wasted in something like the Ruger auto.

Although I'm sure that someone, somewhere wants one with a scope for prarie dogs.
