I wonder if the gun club supporting IPSC means I can use my p226?

yes, you can use any 9mm and above that is safe. Go join up! It will dramatically improve your skill set. Be aware of bad habits though. You can shoot IPSC as tactically as you want and not be penalized for the most part.
IDPA is good also, but not as free thinking. A lot of stuff will add on the time hits so much that shooting for no time makes it easier for the score keeper.

Not exactly. IPSC is getting into the 3-gun business, but it is sorta seperate from true IPSC.

That link isn't too clear on the new multi-gun section, but it will get you started.

Not sure where you're at, but I used to shoot in the SF Bay Area at Chabot, and they had groups shooting IPSC, IDPA, and a separate club-run 3-gun group. The 3-gun group was a fun bunch. Some gamers, but mostly guys having as much fun as possible. Rifle included precision rifle, "battle rifle", and carbine. Shotguns employed mostly buckshot and slug, with some birdshot thrown in occasionally. Pistol could be "regular" (concealed carry), open carry, backup guns, or "magnum pistol". Set of knife stages/clinics once in a while too. Sidearms always worn (and often used) during all other matches. That was a fun time!

One of the local clubs in my area (Detroit) has a classifier included in its 3 gun matches.:)

Bring along your 226 and 3-4 magazines and you will be all set. You should also get some type of kydex holster.
