Bank Robber Gets Lost, Ends Up Back At Crime Scene

POSTED: 10:36 a.m. EDT May 5, 2003
UPDATED: 10:38 a.m. EDT May 5, 2003

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A bank robbery suspect, apparently confused by a labyrinth of routes near Cedar Bluff Road in Knoxville, was arrested about 45 minutes after the heist -- right behind the bank.

David A. Hughes, 27, of Johnson City was charged with one count of aggravated robbery, Knoxville police said.

A branch of First Tennessee Bank was robbed about 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Police officers nabbed Hughes' car about 10:15 a.m. as it circled the bank's back parking lot.

Hughes apparently had driven around the area but found himself back at the bank as he attempted to flee, police said.

Officers Cynthia J. Chandler and Jason Krumenacker handcuffed Hughes 247 feet from the bank's front door, police said. Inside his car they found a yellow plastic bag containing stacks of money and a BB pistol.

No doubt he was confused as all streets in the Land of Orange are named "football", avenue, drive, street, boulevard, strasse, calle, et al. It's like Peach in Hotlanta.:D

That`s ok. We had 2 guys hold up a McDonald`s. They were parked by the curb and when they fled the driver turned into the drive thru lane. They were stuck in a line of customers when we arrested them.:D They were both drunk from a stickup the night before and stole some booze.

This is my neck of the woods (less than one mile from where I used to live). I cannot believe he was this stupid (I'll refrain from comments about Johnson City residents).

dino, oh, yeah, well, I had a guy steal a "boom box" from a downtown apartment and then make his drunken escape in his car which he drove past City Hall (giving the cops in the parking lot the finger) and into the back of an LPD scout car stopped at the light. [insert trombone music here-wah, wah, waaahhh . . .]

Not stopping to ask directons: $0
Not buying a map: $0
Being an idiot in the first place: $0
The look on his face when he's arrested RIGHT BEHIND THE BANK: Priceless

I'm just waiting for somebody to say that this could only happen to a man. A woman would have stopped to ask directions, right?

Just more proof that the stupid criminals are the ones out loose on the streets.

The smart criminals are in government.

Just as dumb a criminal...

Back in my former hometown of Sanford, Maine, a man walked into a bank on Main St., hands the teller a note stating it was a holdup and to give him the money. The teller complied and activates the silent alarm at the same time. The robber runs out of the bank, and goes right past the police station two doors down. As it is just minutes before shift change, a number of cops come running out of the PD, headed for the bank, and nearly knock over the robber. He makes it to the alley way next to the PD, but slips on the fire escape of the adjacent building, apparently hindered by the air cast on his leg. When the cops arrest him, they have to take him to the ER because he broke the other leg in the fall from the fire escape.

Talk about dumb criminals.
