Can anyone give me opinions on my next deer rifle choice I have narrowed it down to a 270 standard and has to be stainless steel with synthetic stock? Also in or around the 500.00 dollar range, also wanting a nice 3-9-40 scope for around 100.00. Any input appreciated.

Howa makes a nice .270, as for the scope, Redfields are good. Remington 700 series is good too, not sure if they make it in stainless though.

Well, in all honesty, I'd probably try to shoot for a $400 rifle and a $200 scope. Then I'd try to scape some couch change together to get that scope budget up to about $240 and get a Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40. At a lower price than that, the Nikon ProStaff might be worth a look. At a lower price than that, my friend has a Simmons Aetec that he's moved around a couple times - it's currently on his new 300WSM which is his current favorite rifle which says something... I've shot a couple rifles with that scope on it and was generally impressed with it. At a lower price than that, I've never had a minutes problem with my Bushnell Dusk and Dawn on my 22 Magnum but note, that isn't really as much a recommendation as a testimonial.

The stainless obviously raises the price of the rifle, almost to an unbearable lever in this price range. You can get a Tikka blued synthetic Whitetail Hunter for $400 but the stainless synthetic T3 is $500. The Howa Lightning would be right about $400 and you could get a Savage with a flimsy stock for $400 but the Tikka is a tremendous step up from the Howa or Savage.

If it were me, I'd make the concession and get the blued Tikka on closeout while I could. And I'd put one of those great Grand Slam scopes on there. Wipe the gun down when you get home and clean it out of it's stock if the weather was particularly nasty. This combo will be top notch, probably unbeatable for the price... think of it as a Sako with a VariX III for 1/3rd the price. And it will last longer than you will.

What about a ruger and stainless options only price is also slightly optional but not over 600.00

I really like Ruger rifles quite a bit but I really dislike their synthetic stocks. Course, a lot of folks seem to like them just fine.

The old Ruger synthetics with the hollowed-out sides were truly horrendous. The new ones aren't exactly wonderful, but at least they look more like a real stock.

Best,
Joe

Look for a good used Mannlicher-Schoenauer. A good one would be the 1950, or 1952 model. Double or single set triggers, and fine accuracy. Not cheap, but then they will last your lifetime, and your children's also.

peruse the used racks, might be awful surprised what you find... at a major retailer here, i found a stainless/laminate ruger w/ leupold 4-12 for $550.

for my own $.02, i'd look for a remington 700 in a configuration I can live with. i'd also rather pay more money for the scope, and less for the gun.

I strongly agree with the advice about getting a Tikka...it'll shoot sub-inch or it doesn't leave the factory.

A couple of years ago I was considering a Ruger- called the company to see what kind of accuracy I might expect out of their rifles. The customer service rep said at least a 3" group...not great, I thought, but with carefully crafted handloads I could probably shrink that to a near hunting-acceptable number. Then the service rep clarified..." No, it's 3" at 50yds [half a foot at 100yds].

In other words, Ruger makes no claim that they're rifles will shoot worth a hill of beans...

Buy a Tikka- you won't be sorry.

This is the .270 I want. Costs $695.00, and I wouldn't put a scope on this beauty.

isnt buying a used gun kinda risky, I mean how many loads can a high powerd rifle like a 270 take before u shoot the barrel out.

The barrel can take more rounds than most rifles will ever see.

Gun by itself ~$300, That gives you more budget for a better scope than $100...

I think you'll find a lot of .270s out have fired less than a box or two a year. My dad would buy a box of 20 rounds and that would be good for about 5 or more years. 1 shot the weekend before the deer hunt to make sure the scope was still on, 1 or 2 shots for the deer. Some years the scope had rattled loose and you might need 2 or 3 extra shots to get it back where you needed.

Browning Stainless Stalker with a Leupold scope. I like the Vari X 3 but the Vari X 2 is cheaper and almost as good.
The Stalker is a little more than what you are talking about but you will be extremely happy with it.
