North zone Texas dove season. My old buddy from college has a farm up north of Waco, town called "West", south of Abott, home of Willy Nelson. Anyway, he says there's lots of birds and they've been dry and the tank on his dad's farm still has water. Actually, he dad has two tanks, but I'm figurin' the big one is the one with water. Anyway, he also says they have lots of coyotes and we're going to do some night hunting for 'em. This is going to be a fun get together. I'm going to take a sporterized SKS for the night hunting, figure the shots will be short since we're night hunting. I have a ton of surplus ammo for that rifle, too. Should be a lot of fun. I reckon I'll pay him back with a deer hunt down on my place later in the year for yet another get together. :D He shot a spike down there one year, the year I bought the place. You'd have thought it was a twelve pointer. He don't get to hunt deer much.
I haven't hunted up there with him in years. Sad thing is, he says the bird population has exploded and that they aren't all that hunter wise due to the fact that, in his words, kids don't hunt 'em like they did when we were young. Sad, if so, that hunting is becoming a smaller tradition. This is not good, IMHO.

That's what I hear.
But we make our own dog food, and the dog LOVES dove, raw, as-is. So she might get a treat.:)

I like dove kabobs, myself. But, I don't shoot at dove for food. It's a LOT cheaper to run down to HEB and buy chicken.
If you don't like the taste of the meat, do what Texans do and use jalapeņo to cook it. I kabob 'em with jalapeņo slices. You don't notice the taste of the meat, LOL! Actually, like I say, I rather like dove. Now, I kabob snow goose breast this way. Snow goose is rather gamey, worse than any duck, even spoonbill. They ain't bad kabobed over a mesquite wood fire, though.

I never taste-tested crap...
I just breast out the little doofers, do the bacon-wrap thing and enjoy. On the grill or in the oven or broiler, no le hace. Whitewings are half again the size of mourning doves, which makes it a bit more eating, per bird. :)
Same deal for blue quail, for that matter. Another critter where bigger is better.

Roger that!
I'm not a big fan of dove meat either but I love to shoot them. Makes for a great day in the field.
Got the Mec Jr. spun up and am pumping out rounds now for the early season.
