Carry Combinations...

Hello. When I was a uniformed police officer, I tried always to carry a BUG secreted away should my duty pistol be taken, run dry, etc. For several years, the BUG was a Kahr K9, but I just never could "warm up" to it. I tried a Glock 26 as well, but the one that backed up my Hi Power more than any other was the simple S&W J-frame .38 Special. Partially supported by the top of my duty boots and carried in an ankle rig, it was easy enough to forget that it was even there. In colder months, it sometimes rode in my left-side uniform jacket pocket.

For several years, this was my usual handgun carry combination for work.

This Glock 26 rode many a mile with me, but it was just never comfortable enough. Intellectually, it makes more sense than the 5-shot .38 Special, but in the end simple preference won out over intellect. I think that at least some of the time this happens to more than a few of us.

These days I sometimes find myself carrying the Ruger SP101 loaded with .357 magnum Corbon 125-gr. DPX, backed up by a well-used S&W Model 642 loaded with Remington 158-gr. LSWCHP +P. The same speed loader works with either revolver, but necessitates being loaded with the .38 Special load.

How about you? For those who sometimes tote more than one, what combinations have you come to prefer?

Best.

As BUGs go, it's tough to be a j-frame! I've had my model 60 at my side many a time!

It's rare for me to carry a BUG, but when I do it's a S&W 340PD J-frame.

I had a KelTec P11 that was good, but if you want to talk about setiment winning over practical?? My favoriet bug was a CZ70, (no, not made by CZ-UB), in .32. Nifty little PPK wanna be, but with lots of bells and whistles found usually on much more expensive guns. The .32 didn't pack much punch, but the little old Czech fed HydraShok without a burp. I almost qualified POST with the little demon, too -missed by one.
Nowadays, if I actually carry two guns, it's a CZ75 PO1 primary, and a near identical CZ75 PCR as BUG.

My primary has been a Browning Hi-Power .40 for about two years. At first, my Kel-Tec P11 (my first gun ever) was my backup until I traded it for a used-but-unused Taurus 85. I could have gotten a new S&W, but I don't trust those locks - the Taurus was old enough to be lockless.

But that Hi-Power is heavy, and the .40 mags aren't quite double-stack. The same size Glock magazine holds 13 while the Hi-Power magazine only holds 10. I ended up buying a Glock 19, and recently I have been carrying it in a shoulder holster (mostly because I haven't made a belt holster for it yet), but the Taurus 85 stays in my pocket.

When I was in LE, my sidearm for the majority of the time was a SIG P220. My backup pieces were a SIG P232 in a pocket holster, carried in my left pants pocket, and a SW 642 in an ankle rig. I figured it covered all bases. I later added a Kel-tec P32 with pocket clip attached to by bodyarmor as a "last-ditch" piece.
These days I still carry a P220 backed with a P232, or a P226 backed with a P228. I still have the 642 and P32, but they don't get carried much aside from when the weather gets too hot for a decent cover garment for the others. I generally don't feel too comfortable with the P32 though, I feel it made a better "3rd" gun than anything though.

On the rare occasions that I carry two guns, it's usually this on my hip:

and this in my pocket:

For many years it was the Sig 220 and the S&W Model 49 (38 special). Now I'm carrying the G19 and the G26 in a holster velcroed to my vest.

However the Model 49 rides along in my patrol car within easy reach. Riding in a car that little J-frame can be brought into action quicker than my Glock in it's holster.

I like my model 49. :)

Usually, G19 is primary, and a j-frame of some sort is the BUG. Truthfully, I often end up leaving the G19 in the glovebox of my car and the j-frame (currently the 431pd in .32 mag) rides in a left front pocket (I'm right handed, don't ask me why I keep it on the weak side. That's just what I've preferred for some reason).
Since I've shot alot of +p+ out of the G19, I've thought of trading the g19 for a G23, and getting rid of the J-frame for a G27. Really, though, like Stephen said, its hard to beat the j-frame even if intellectually the babyGlock makes more sense. It's so convenient just to drop the j-frame in a pocket when running to the store. It doesn't get in the way, and its 5 or 6 shots you know will go "bang" every time.
Recently I ordered a SIG p232 to replace the j-frame, but I don't know if I'll go through with selling the Smith. It's just so easy to carry.
Soon I'm heading to LA ("lower Alabama") to visit some of my wife's family. LA is gator country, and there have been quite a few attacks on people lately. Having a G27 as an "always" gun in the deep forest where her family lives is alot more comforting than either the .380 SIG or .32 Smith.
That got me thinking. By the stats, I'm more likely to get car-jacked on the way to the forest than attacked by a gator once i'm there. Wouldn't I rather have the G27 for that, too?
Oh well. At least I'm armed.
Y'all have a good night,

David

My primary carry weapons are a 9mm SIG P210-6 worn in a belt or shoulder holster and a big folding knife, either a Darrel Ralph Madd Maxx or a Benchmade Skirmish. When I carry a backup firearm, is either a similar model pistol, or a .32 ACP Seecamp, carried far enough out of the way to require some effort to draw, but not so far as to require a flashlight to find.

I carry a P32 weakside front pocket in a galco holster as my BUG. It prints like a wallet. Usually, my 340PD is my primary. When I'm at home, the P32 stays in the pocket.
