I inherited a S & W, 357 revolver, black with a 6 in barrel. How can I identify what model of pistol this is. where are the markings located, etc.

Thanks,............miner59

Do you see any markings?

Open the cylinder and look around on the frame.
Also look on the barrel. And the frame above the grips

A picture would probably get it ID'd pretty quickly.

Open the cylinder and look on the frame where the crane swings out.

The serial number should be on the butt... turn the gun upside down and look at the metal strip between the handgrip panels. Once you have a serial number you can contact S&W and get the model number of the gun from them as well as an owner's manual for it.

On newer guns, the model number is on the inside of the frame, visible when you open the cylinder. The serial number can sometimes be found here too.

You can also take the gun to a dealer you trust and ask him what it is.

You can also browse the pics on the S&W website (http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10001&catalogId=11101&categoryId=15703&parent_category_rn=15701&top_category=15701) to see if ycan find a revolver that matches the one you have inherited.

Contact info for S&W is here (http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CustomContentDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=11101&content=12010&sectionId=10504).

Further to what has been mentioned, yes - a pic is more than useful.

Does the cylinder release operate forwards or backwards - another thing to note. Take of grips - what sort of mainspring is inside etc.
