I believe they started trickling in shortly after they were first manufactured in the mid 70's, then when the iron curtain came down they became much more common.

As for date of manufacture, there should be a little oval on the slide near the extractor that has the last two digits of the year of manufacture stamped into it.

In the early 80's you would see them at gun shows. They came in from Canada. In 1980's dollars they were about $800.00.

You cannot tell the year of manufacture from serial numbers. You should be abel to find a small oval near the ejection port that has the year made shown there.
