I shot my first rounds of IDPA last night and was totally amazed at how much fun it was.

The very small group were all extremely helpful. I have long grown out of thinking i know everything so i soaked up every bit of advice i could. I always thought i was safe with my handguns especially at a range, I was stopped several times when i was doing things without even realizing i was unsafe, Its always good to have another set of eyes to make sure everyone has a fun night.

our course was set up with 3 body targets on each side of a moving 5 point steel plate star. 2 shots to each body target, and clear the star; when you knock off one of the plates the star rotates from weight shift.

I improved steadily from, about 62 seconds on the first, to 48 sec, to 36 on my last round.

Needless to say Im going back next Tues.

Thanks for the advice about the Beretta, It was flawless and accuracy was never a thought once i clamed down.

Glad you enjoyed yourself. It'll take a while before you get totally relaxed at a shoot. My brain still turns to mush when the buzzer sounds. Keep shooting, you'll only get better. Surpirsed to hear there was a Texas Star in IDPA, I've only seen that in IPSC around here.

Yah, there was a big debate on the IDPA board about whether a Texas Star could present a tactical problem within IDPA policy. The consensus was that it would not if just set out as Pearl's Dad says, though with some other props, like a setup to make it simulate a threat moving behind a window, it could.

Yep, just shoot safe and have fun!

I've picked up new handgun handling skills shooting IDPA (I know, it's a game) and although it's a "sport" and I'm naturally not a competitive person, I do enjoy the good natured competition at the local level. After you become familiar with the other shooters and they get used to you, expect to get razzed whether you shoot a stage clean or blow it. It’s as fun to cheer on someone as it is to dog them.

I like the “competing against yourself” aspect too.

This may not indicate improved times, unless all the stages are set up to similar round count/difficulty factor.
