I'm getting rid of my Springfield XD Service. It's too big to carry in anything but a good holster, and way too much planning has to go into wardrobe. I want to find something smaller, with some power ... revolver. But I also want it to fit in a pocket or IWB holster very easily. Finally, I'd like it to be rather inexpensive ... just something for emergency defense, not target shooting. Oh, and a partridge in a pear tree, too.
Any suggestions?

If you want power in a compact, inexpensive revolver, I don't think it gets any better than a Ruger SP101 DAO with bobbed hammer and 2 1/4" barrel. With a Clipdraw, it disappears IWB and with deep pockets and a good pocket holster, it can be tolerated inside a pocket throughout the day.

would suggest an S and W 342PD in .38 Special+P, or on the cheap and powerful side, anything that Charter Arms (http://www.charterfirearms.com/) makes, like the Bulldog Pug (.44 special) or the Off Duty (.38 special) or the Mag Pug (.357 mag)http://gunblast.com/Charter-OffDuty.htm http://gunblast.com/Bulldog_Pug.htm http://www.charterfirearms.com/charter_magpug.htm
