Boy's war game sparked invasion fears

An Austrian teenager who dressed up as a soldier to play war games in the woods sparked a major alert over fears the country was being invaded.

Martin Schloegel, 15, from Dellach, was dressed up in military camouflage gear complete with a wooden toy rifle.

He was spotted by a 53-year-old forester who thought the area was coming under attack from a foreign army.

He called local police who led a hunt for the 'army' involving helicopters, special Cobra combat forces and sniffer dogs.

The teenager who was finally caught said he had not intended to hurt anyone and was only on his way to a friend's house to play soldiers after months of watching the war on TV.

That kid must have been GOOD! Maybe he was just taking our Army's motto "Army of one" to the extreme.
"Invasion of one" :D :D

Wouldn't you just have liked to see this? I would pay good money to watch that. You could probably make a pretty funny movie out of it, too. This does make me wonder just who they thought was invading, and how the complete and total lack of an invading army required them to call up helicopters and dogs. I find it hard to believe that Austria is chock full of complete idiots, so I do have to wonder if this "53-year-old forester" (what the heck is a "forester?") told them that he saw one kid in camo, or he concocted something much more exciting for whatever reason.

This is why I have given up writing satire - I just cannot compete with actual news events. ( it is really unfair, too! ) :D

========

I think a "forester" over there might be loosely similar to an employee of the United States Forest Circus (probably someone with the keys to the toliet paper dispenser in a public outhouse).

Azrael (I still don't know why you use the name of the death angel, kid, it's kind of tempting well, the death angel, you know?) A forester is someone who professionally manages a forest. This is not a common term here in the US but in Germany (and Austria, which wishes it was Germany, or wishes Germany wished it was Austria, or...) the forests are professionally managed to the point of what we would consider paranoia. not a branch or tree is out of place - blow downs are removed unless they have been previously planned for and when you go hunting you have a professional guide with you who has the authority to tell you which animal is the only animal you are allowed to shoot.

I well remember a German language teacher who once waxed on about how 'untidy' and 'messy' American forests were...

one of those cultural differences, I guess....

Point 1: Our fifteen year old Carlos Hathcock needs to learn more about woodcraft and remaining hidden. Point 2: At 15, shouldn't he have had a real gun by now? :D
