for like, sniper rifles?

I dont know, lets say there was some situation and a special police group (dont know the proper term) was called in and they put snipers on the roof of an ajacent building. What would those men be using as rifles?

On a side note, I love how I can ask questions like this on THR and not be frowned upon or called a 'violent person'.:) Its nice. Maybe its just a MA thing...

They use all kinds of stuff. Its really impossible to pick one and say that is the standard as every police department has different standards and regulations.

BUT, if you want to know what I consider the best rifle available for the job, Accuracy Internation AW and AWP.

The police snipers around here use .308 Rem. 700's with 20" bull barrels and Leupold variables.

Accuracy Internation AW and AWP.No offense, but what PD has that kinda money? I wanna know, so I can join:D . Rem. 700 "PSS" seem to be common. Nothing fancy--they don't have the unlimited budget of the military, and rarely take a shot beyond 300 yards, so they just need short-distance super-accuracy--and many rifles can acheive that.

The Rem M700s seemed pretty common. Win M70 wouldn't surprise me either. Pretty much your run-of-the-mill target/hunting type set-ups. I did remember one fellow at the range doing what was really needed: PRACTICING! He was working on charting cold vs hot shot impacts in his log book. Not very talkative, concentrating on what he was doing, very business-like. (No macho crap)

Yeah, police somewhere in the country, have used pretty much every major-brand bolt-rifle for precision shooting at one time or another. But probably the most common action is going to be a Remington 700 with a varmint barrel and a composite stock. (This is the preferred action that the AI rifles are built on as well.) Usually chambered in .308, most of them are probably PSS and LTRs.

Few shooters OR police departments have the time and resources to use this rifle to its full potential, and if they get anything more expensive, they are usually wasting money. The only units that REALLY have the resources to use more rifle than that would be well-funded urban SWAT units, and federal units like HRT.
