Can someone explain the advantages of having a Fluted Barrel?

On a modern rifle it makes a barrel lighter while increasing the surface area to promote cooling.

Mostly, on my Katahdin, I think it just makes it look cool and makes other shooters drool on the range! :p

Theoretically it promotes barrel cooling and decreases the weight of the barrel.

The flutes not only lighten the barrel, it also provides the same stifness as the heavier barrel. This promotes accuracy, and still lightens the weight.:D
