I too am in the market for a spotting scope. I also would like to hear what everyone has to say on this subject. Give us the good, bad and the ugly on spotting scopes gents.

I use one of these for casual use at the range

While it will pick out 30 cal holes at a couple hundred yards, the optics are way too bad to spend very much time looking thru it. You would get eyestrain in short order trying to glass a hillside. You might want to consider a good pair of binoculars instead of a spotting scope.

for range use to 200 yards, the nikon sky & earth is a very good one for the money (also available as a package deal done up in camo w/ a tripod and window adapter).

for a little further (to 5-600 yards), cabela's has a good one for about $500 - 600 w/ ed glass - great value.

While I have no first hand knowledge of the Konus, you should probably look into the Konus 20-60x80 if you want something cheap.

If you can find one of the older 'armored' versions of the Bushnell Spacemaster 15-45x60 or 20-45x60, those are excellent lower cost scopes.

My current spotting scope is a Kowa 661 with a 25x LER eyepiece. I have a Bushnell Spacemaster 20-45x60 as my spare/backup.

Just so you know, if you plan on trying to see bullet holes on paper at 200 yards, you're going to need higher quality optics that cost more than $300. Even the high dollar scopes can have trouble seeing holes in paper at 200 due to mirage, so you'll want the best quality glass you can get.
