XD40 vs XD45

Dont know if this has been beaten to death or not yet, but I didnt come up wit anything on the search feature.
How do yall choose?! I love .40 and I love .45, and I can only afford one right now. The only thing leaning me toward the .40 more than the .45, is the fact that every .45 other than a 1911 just seemed too innaccurate to me (deffinatly could be me more than the gun, but im talking more along the lines of Taurus .45 semi-auto, S&W sigma (i believe it was) ). I just cant decide which I want!!! IF the .45 is as accurate as I have been told it is, I would rather go that route.
Any major pros/cons over the other? This is mainly for range use, farm fun, and home SD. TIA

The XD-45 is accurate, I've fired them before, it's just as accurate as the XD-40, which did really impress me.
The XD-45 is bigger, has a bigger grip to accomodate .45acp
The biggest difference... a .40S&W will drop out the barrel of a .45acp... it just packs more punch.
I don't know what the going price is for .40S&W but I do know that .45acp isn't the cheapest round for target practice, that's something you may want to consider.

.40 ammo is cheaper to shoot, or shoot more for the same price! plus it is a good defense cartridge if it needs to be used in a defensive scenario. The .45 xd has very minute in the difference in size, plus you get the 13+1 in the xd frame, some feat, that alone. i love all the models of the xd, and would gladly carry any of them into harms way. .45 is just a little to expensive for the amount of shooting i do. So i will stay with the 9mm and .40 versions!

Go to a gunshop, hold both in your hand. See which one feels better. Buy that one.
I tried both. There was no discernible difference in accuracy (both shoot better than I do) and I couldn't really tell a difference in the grip, balance or weight. Recoil wasn't a major issue with either one.
The .45ACP makes bigger holes, so all other things being equal, I bought that one.
Good choice on the XD, btw - no matter what caliber you settle on. I love mine.

I struggled with the same thing 4 months ago. I picked the 45ACP and I'm very happy with it. It shoots tight groups and the 13+1 :) is quite a battery. The grip is not a large as you might expect from a mag like these. I have medium sized hands and I can easily control the XD. Like he said... the 40 will slide down the 45 barrel. Hope this helps.

I'd say the big factor, other than fit, would be finish. The 45 has the new melonite finish the 40 has the old finish everyone complains about.

If I could only buy one I'd go with the greatest American pistol round the 45ACP!
Don't get me wrong, I like the 40S&W...I shoot it in ipsc, and in my carry gun and I just bought a S&W M&P in 40, but, if I could only get one I'd go with the great American tradition. There's just so much great history connected to the 45acp. Make your second gun a 40. Also, the 40 has a bit of a snap to it whereas the 45 is a little more pushy in recoil. Buy the way, if you shoot alot but casually alot, not competitively alot, get a Lee reloader and reload your ammo. Its fun and pays or itself in no time.

I have the XD .40 S&W subcompact and it's very accurate for a three inch barrel. I also have the XD .45 ACP tactical 5 inch barrel and it's very accurate.
Like most have already said in this thread the .40 ammo is cheaper than the .45 that's the only real difference I can see.
I like both my XD's very much and I can shoot them very good.

The 45 just seems better balanced to me--the 40 seems heavier, since it's more narrow, and the weight is about the same. I guess you could say it doesn't distribute as evenly.

They're both excellent! I say go with the 45. Awesome firearms.

Someone else already mentioned it, but I would go with the .45 because of the melonite finish.

I went with the .45 ACP in the Springfield XD, cuz that is MY caliber. I own
many handguns chambered for this round. If cost of ammo is a problem,
may I suggest turning to loading your own; but on the second thought
the cost of components has risen sharply during 2006. As too which is
more accurate, I find that my 4" service model XD .45 ACP shoots close
to my West German SIG-SAUER P220A .45 ACP, in terms of accuracy.
I'm not saying the .45 ACP is more accurate, but its accurate enough
for combat conditions. Either choice should serve you proudly~! :D

They're both great, but I chose .45. I might get a .40 XD at a later time.

I have not had any issues with the finish on my xd .40 that many compalin about, so that really dosen't bother me, but a tougher fininsh would be a good addition. just because mine hasn't warn to bad yet doen't mean it won't, so the melonite could only be a good thing.
as long as its an XD
I have to agree here!:)

Quality practice, Quality practice, Quality practice, Quality practice. The 45 acp is one of the most accurate rounds available...but the shooter has to do their part to unleash this accuracy. The one thing these rounds may be a little expensive resulting in less trigger time...you may want to consider 9mm so you can get the quality practice time in...there is no short cut to it!
Make sure you are practicing good technique, get the trigger time in & be patient
