In case anyone is looking for new boots... and a good deal on some...
The other day I got a pair of Danner Pronghorn GTX 1000-gram boots at Dicks Sporting Goods for $89! I don't know if this applies to everywhere, hopefully it does. But in case your in Pittsburgh check out the one at South Hills Village. I was amazed as I never go into Dick's but these were on clearance. Not bad for a $190 boot.

This is a good boot -- take care of it. I advise using shoe goo liberally to hold down wear in the heels, because these boots cannot be resoled.

When i was a fit young chap, some time ago and several injuries ago i did my Comando course on Dartmoor. (dificult to believe i know!) i learned a lot, about leadership, about men about myself and i learned that danner boots are the dogs bollocks! (good, verry good). Buy these boots if you get the chance.

No Dicks out this way, bummer. They didn't have that boot on their website either.

About 20 years or so ago, a couple of Infantry lieutenants from Fort Lewis visited Danner, and got them to make a good military boot -- which Danner calls the "Fort Lewis Boot." So many people in the Army bought this boot that the Army finally woke up and smelled the coffee.
I like a "stitch down" boot -- which is what Danner calls a welted boot, because they can be resoled.

I'm on my second pair of Danner Ft. Lewis Go-Devils. They've got nine years of abuse on them and still going strong. They are about due for a resoling though.
I got seven years out of the first pair with two of them being military. They would have lasted longer had I taken better care of them.

Guess I'll find out how these are! Yes they are made in China but I've read Danner has the QC on these down pretty darn good. Only heard good things about em and couldn't pass up the deal!
Thanks for the info though everyone, I'll make sure to take good care of em. :)

This is why I advise people to go with welted, or what Danner calls "stitch down" style boots -- they can be resoled at any shoe repair shop. And Danners are not boots you throw away when the soles wear out.

That sounds like a good deal. I bought uninsulated Pronghorns at Cabela's last fall for about $149. I like 'em a lot! Worth every penny.

the Pronghorns are lightweight, comfortable, and require very little break-in.
Unfortunately, they are DINOs- ie. Danner in name only.
I bought a pair last year and broke them in for a Utah archery elk hunt. Got into some brutal tough country and had a heel come flapping loose on day 3. I carry a tube of superglue in my backpack and glued it up while I took a break. (It is still holding.) My feet didn't suffer on the 6 day hunt so I spose I will say the boots were adequate.
I filled out the warranty/comment card when I got home and sent it in with the disappointing details. Ironically today, one year later, I got an email from Danner thanking me for my purchase and for filling out the comment card. No mention of the problem or concerns I expressed.
I probably won't buy another pair of DINOs.

I have two pairs of Danners. The 8" Strikers were made in China but were only $75 on sale right from Danner. So far they have held up very well and are comfortable. My Rain Forest boots are one of the ones still made in Portland and were $240. I wouldn't be surprised if these will last 10 - 15 years with proper care. I am hard on boots and got sick of trashing a $80 pair of boots in a little over a year. I will be very interested in seeing how long the Strikers last. I wish I would have gotten another pair of them because they are regularly around $160. I do switch off wearing both of these along with a pair of Rockys.

A great buy at that price.
Like apparently some others here, I too lament the decline of sewn welt construction footwear. Directly moulded soles are a largely cost cutting production expedient - although a benefit in scuff protection is offered by this method. But I have often worn out the soles on a pair of DMS shoes or boots while the uppers were still plenty servicable.
One way to help preserve your favorite (and expensive) hunting, hiking and climbing boots is to wear a cheap pair of "walk ins" for the trip to your hunting or hiking grounds - and don your good boots when going off the asphalt and concrete.
